This is one of a fourteen volume set that was prepared for Elsa Elizabeth Deckelman, Member Elizabeth Barrett Browning Chapter Roycorft Junto, Elmira, New York 1932. The contents include: Preface, Autobiographical, George Eliot, Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, William E. Gladstone, J. M. W. Turner, Jonathan Swift, Walt Whitman, Victor Hugo, William Wordsworth, William M. Thackeray, Charles Dickens, Oliver Goldsmith, William Shakespeare, and Thomas Edison. Elbert Green Hubbard (June 19, 1856 ? May 7, 1915) was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. Raised in Hudson, Illinois, he had early success as a salesman for the Larkin Soap Company. Hubbard is known best as the founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York, an influential exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement. Among Hubbard's many publications were the fourteen-volume work Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great and the short publication A Message to Garcia. He and his second wife, Alice Moore Hubbard, died aboard the RMS Lusitania when it was sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915. Hubbard's second wife, Alice Moore Hubbard, was a graduate of the New Thought-oriented Emerson College of Oratory in Boston and a noted suffragist. The Roycroft Shops became a site for meetings and conventions of radicals, freethinkers, reformers, and suffragists. This is a collection of biographical pieces written by Elbert Hubbard, and published monthly starting in 1894. The pieces were collected and republished in a 14-volume Memorial Edition in 1916, shortly after his death. The first volume includes a memoir of the author, and the last volume includes an index to the entire set. Elsa Elizabeth Deckelman was born in New York in 1904 to Charles and Anna Deckelman. Several pages were never opened along the outside edge! That means that there are places where two pages are still joined together as they were when printed. It also indicates that this volume was most likely not read. The dust jacket is paper, heavy, sometimes referred to as oatmeal. It shows some edge wear but not much at all. In the portion of the jacket that covers the back edge of the spine, the jacket has a 1/2" tear. There is no other notable damage, but take a close look at the pics to view for yourself. The book cover is embossed cloth. There is a bronzed view of a building on the front. The interior other than being a little yellowed, has the appearance of never having been read. The binding is tight. No marks in the book. No foxing. The silk bookmark is intact.
