[ED: Hardcover], [PU: Quercus], In 140 BC the Greek poet Antipater of Sidon wrote a poem which included a list of seven themata- a word which can be translated as must sees. Such lists were popular in the ancient world and we know that the historian Herodotus wrote one, as did the greatest Alexandrian librarian Callimachus of Cyrene, Diodorus of Sicily and the Roman geographer Strabo, amongst others.
What all these ancient writers wanted to do was to give us an itinerary of the very best, most wonderful, most awe-inspiring sights that might be found in their world. Many of these lists have long since disappeared along with the monuments that they once recorded. Although Antipater s list survived, there was so much more that he could never have seen. He lived long before the sheer walls of the Colosseum reared up in Rome, before Justinian built the great church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and long after such wonders as Mohenjo Daro, and The Great Ziggurat at Ur had been forgotten. He could never have known of the caves of Ellora in India, or the Indonesian shrines at Borobudur. The Americas were unknown so the cities of the Maya and the Great Serpent Mound of the Adena meant nothing to him. And yet all these were also wonders of the ancient world.
The book tells the stories of the greatest sights a world traveller might have seen in antiquity had they been able to journey across the globe and through the centuries. It is a complete list of themata for a now sadly impossible journey to see what humanity once achieved and to survey the remains of the greatest accomplishments of civilizations which today lie in ruins.
Wonders of the Ancient World presents 40 of the most extraordinary feats of human engineering and design created between the dawn of human civilization and the onset of the medieval period. Accompanying timelines and boxed features provide a wealth of fascinating information about the history of the site and society, as well as the latest archaeological evidence and understanding.
