In the Memorial and English Inquisition he pointed out how he had lost large sums through having parted with the Office, which amounts, amongst others, he expected should be made up to him by the contributions of the public. That his fancied wrongs rankled in his breast till his death, is evident from his allusion to the matter in his will, made only a few months before his decease (Part III.. We may here incidentally remark that the name of the Company of London Insurers had in 1714 a sufficiently good reputation to induce a Mr. William Adams to set up an Office under that name, and to issue proposals for Insurance on the Lives of Men, Women, and Children.1 We know nothing further of the scheme. Povey in his Secret History alleges that the 24 Members joined with the Lustring Company, which raised their shares to a very high advance, and all let into the secret sold at a great price. Soon after the Office gave out that they had broken with the Lustring Company and stood on their own bottom, and then Lustring shares fell to nothing. This would seem to have been, by Povey's statement, in the year 1720. There is no record of any such transaction.
