Excerpt from book: VOICE CULTIVATION NO USE AFTER EARLY ADULT LIFE: A FALLACY. It is quite proverbial to hear that it is of no use to hope for any really good results from voice training unless undertaken more or less early in adult life. The writer can testify, from the most satisfactory observation, that this is quite a mistake, and he can name others who are able to do the same. No doubt the earlier it is undertaken the better. It should really begin as soon as speaking powers develope with the little child, and then nothing is wanted but to preserve the delicate organ from losing its perfect physiological action. But with thought and perseverance there is hardly any time when improvement may not be established both in the use of the speaking and the singing voice. A true physical hold of Nature's laws as they apply to the breath and its control at the throat, through the maintenance of the necessary general conditions of mind and body, will alone accomplish anything of worth. On these lines much can be done later than conventional opinion admits. There are many in the fifties and sixties of life who suffer from throat weakness, the sole cause of which is an increasing lack of automatic control of the breath: ?the result is a tendency to increasing huskiness and weakness of voice. This can be checked and overcome, and the natural balance of parts restored by giving sufficient time and trouble fornatural conditions to re-assert themselves. That which takes but very little time and trouble earlier in life necessarily takes more of these essential requirements as life progresses; but this is not an insurmountable difficulty, and under ordinary circumstances it is the only one to face.
