Neuroconstructivism - II: Perspectives and Prospects (Oxford Series in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience) - Taschenbuch

ISBN: 0198529937

[SR: 3382421], Paperback, [EAN: 9780198529934], Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press, Book, [PU: Oxford University Press], Oxford University Press, What are the processes, from conception to adulthood, that enable a single cell to grow into a sentient adult? They are so complex that any attempt to understand development necessitates a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating data from cognitive studies, computational modeling, and neuroimagingan approach until now seldom taken when considering child development. Neuroconstructivism is a major two-volume work that seeks to redress this balance, presenting an integrative new framework for considering development. In Volume One, the authors review up-to-date findings from neurobiology, brain imaging, child development, as well computer and robotic modeling to consider why children's thinking develops the way it does, and propose a new synthesis of development that is based on five key principles found to operate at many different levels of description. Their Neuroconstructivist framework also shows how developmental disorders, such as dyslexia, can arise from typical developmental processes operating under atypical constraints. Of central importance to Neuroconstructivism is the idea that computer and robotic models are vital tools for investigating the processes and mechanisms involved in learning and development. Volume Two illustrates the principles of Neuroconstructivist development through contributions from nine different labs across the world. This volume complements Volume One by providing concrete examples of how the Neuroconstructivist principles can be grounded in a diverse range of domains, and thereby shape the research agenda in each., 11119, Psychology & Counseling, 11121, Adolescent Psychology, 11130, Applied Psychology, 11132, Child Psychology, 11149, Counseling, 11160, Creativity & Genius, 11162, Developmental Psychology, 11172, Experimental Psychology, 11173, Forensic Psychology, 11177, History, 16311181, Medicine & Psychology, 11186, Mental Illness, 11164, Neuropsychology, 11189, Occupational & Organizational, 11192, Pathologies, 11194, Personality, 11196, Physiological Aspects, 227701, Psychiatry, 11199, Psychoanalysis, 11201, Psychopharmacology, 11203, Psychotherapy, TA & NLP, 11205, Reference, 11207, Research, 11209, Sexuality, 11223, Social Psychology & Interactions, 11229, Testing & Measurement, 10, Health, Fitness & Dieting, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 21, Reference & Test Preparation, 11444, Almanacs & Yearbooks, 11448, Atlases & Maps, 2572, Careers, 11626, Catalogs & Directories, 11472, Consumer Guides, 11475, Dictionaries & Thesauruses, 11713, Encyclopedias & Subject Guides, 11823, English as a Second Language, 11761, Etiquette, 11773, Foreign Language Study & Reference, 11880, Genealogy, 11902, Quotations, 8975382011, Survival & Emergency Preparedness, 5267710011, Test Preparation, 11970, Words, Language & Grammar, 5267707011, Writing, Research & Publishing Guides, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 573358, Cognitive Psychology, 226685, Behavioral Sciences, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 227701, Psychiatry, 227703, Adolescent, 227704, Child, 227203, Internal Medicine, 265542, Medicine, 173514, Medical Books, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 15811861, Cognitive, 6511980011, Psychology, 173514, Medical Books, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books

What are the processes, from conception to adulthood, that enable a single cell to grow into a sentient adult? The processes that occur along the way are so complex that any attempt to understand development necessitates a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating data from cognitive studies, computational work, and neuroimaging - an approach till now seldom taken in the study of child. What are the processes, from conception to adulthood, that enable a single cell to grow into a sentient adult? The processes that occur along the way are so complex that any attempt to understand development necessitates a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating data from cognitive studies, computational work, and neuroimaging - an approach till now seldom taken in the study of child development. Neuroconstructivism is a major new 2 volume publication that seeks to redress this balance, presenting an integrative new framework for considering development. Computer and robotic models provide concrete tools for investigating the processes and mechanisms involved in learning and development. Volume 2 illustrates the principles of Neuroconstructivist development, with contributions from 9 different labs across the world. Each of the contributions illustrates how models play a central role in understanding development. The models presented include standard connectionist neural network models as well as multi-agent models. Also included are robotic models emphasizing the need to take embodiment and brain-system interactions seriously. A model of Autism and one of Specific Language Impairment also illustrate how atypical development can be understood in terms of the typical processes of development but operating under restricted conditions. This volume complements Volume 1 by providing concrete examples of how the Neuroconstructivist principles can be grounded within a diverse range of domains, thereby shaping the research agenda in those domains.
