By the time this account was written, Ida Pfeiffer was "so well known that shipping companies were begging her to accept free passages.". In the Preface Ida does indeed thank the "Directors of the two Steam Boat Companies" who offered her free passage. She had intended to travel to Australia but with the discovery of gold "emigrants were rushing thither from every part of the world, and the cost of living there rising to a height beyond all calculation." Instead, her intrepid travels took her to Borneo, Java and Sumatra, into the jungles of the Celebes and the mountains of Peru.
