(REVELATION: According to the Doctrine of the Synagogue) S. Steinheim (1789-1866) is among the major Jewish thinkers of the 19th century and this work, his magnum opus, is acknowledged as one of the most interesting Jewish philosophical studies of the modern period. Its special importance lies in its rejection of the 19th century synthesis of Idealist philosophy and Judaism. In contradistinction to the current philosophical orthodoxy, Steinheim argued that Judaism was not equatable (or reducible) to philosophy, especially given the centrality of revelation, the very nature and character of which transcended philosophical categories. Steinheim's arguments to this end are cogent and the whole work is both theologically and philosophically informed, well deserving of its status as a classic. Moreover, it should be noted that given modern existentialist views of religion Steinheim's work has again begun to attract contemporary philosophical, as well as historical, interest.
