The Hendersons lived in one of those old-fashioned streets on the west side of town, which have been left far behind by the upward march of fashion, but have not, as yet, yielded to the encroachments of business, nor been given up to the gradual deterioration that seizes hold of tenement blocks. Forty years ago, these solid and really comfortable brick houses were occupied by the same class relatively, that now live in the brownstone fronts that stretch northward from Madison Square to Central Park. The street in question was very quiet, and extremely respectable. It is not necessary to mention the precise location, but it was some distance south from Union Square, and to the westward of Broadway. It was owned by Mrs. Henderson; and now that their cash capital had been sunk by Herbert, it represented the entire wealth of the family. The mother and daughters were seated in die front room of the first floor?a room extending the whole length of the building, divided in the centre by folding doors, which were always open. It was the parlor, so-called, but was also the sitting-room; and a very pleasant and cheery room it was. The furniture was rich, but faded with the daily use that takes from lustre and adds to comfort. The chairs were wide and deep, and the lounges inviting. Mrs. Henderson was a small woman with a fair and quiet face, and perfectly white hair. She sat in a rocking-chair, knitting placidly, and was a picture of kindly and beautiful old age.
