The writings of the New Testament are distinguished by a comprehensiveness of expression which, I apprehend, will be found to be one of the highest qualities of style. I know not how to describe this excellence in the terms of rhetorical art; but it can have escaped the notice of few readers of the Bible. It would not be right to call it a condensation of thought, for this, usually at least, implies an absence of that simplicity which is essential to a book intended to have general circulation among the people, and such a book is the Bible. Neither would it be doing justice either to the sacred writings or to their authors, ta resolve this quality into a happy choiceof words, for such selection of language supposes a study of mere rhetorical effect, which was far below the aim orthe thought of those who composed the records of Christianity. Still I can no better explain what I have in mind than by represe. BUTTS, PRINTER, 2 School Street; SMALL SINS. JAMES, III. S. Behold How Oeeat A Matter A Little Fire Kindleth The apostle uses these words in stating the necessity of watching the tongue. As the powerful horse is governed by a slender bit, and the mighty ship is turned about by a very small helm; so, he says, does the tongue though a small member, boast itself in doing great things. With a few words it may produce large and extensive consequences. Its small errors may lead to vast mischiefs. The slander which it whispers in the ear, not intending it shall go further, may be proclaimed aloud upon the house-top. The evil suspicion which was started in jest, may be circulated in earnest. The unkind reflection, which was made thoughtlessly, and with no intent to injure, may be spread abroad, increasing as it spreads, till it causes wide ruin to reputation and peace. The little flame of scandalous gossip, which you play with in company as a very pretty and harmless thing, may grow wild and fierce, and rage far, and become a wide consuming conflagration. So great a matter may a little fire kindle. What is thus true of evil speaking, is true universally. Trifles oftentimes lead to the most important consequences. The greatest results spring from apparently slight causes. There is a principle of growth in every thing. As the spark kindles and spreads; as the acorn unfolds, and stretches itself out into a proud and lofty tree; as the drop trickles from the summit of the mountain, and descending through the plain swells into a mighty river; as the helpless infant enters life without reason or ...
