It was founded in 1923 and for decades dominated by Henry Luce, who built a highly profitable stable of magazines....Time has the world's largest circulation for a weekly news magazine, and has a readership of 25 million, 20 million of which are in the US....Time magazine was created in 1923 by Briton Hadden and Henry Luce, making it the first weekly news magazine in the United States. The two had previously worked together as chairman and managing editor respectively of the Yale Daily News. They first called the proposed magazine Facts. They wanted to emphasize brevity, so that a busy man could read it in an hour. They changed the name to Time and used the slogan "Take Time It's Brief." Hadden was a rather carefree figure, who liked to tease Luce and saw Time as something important but also fun. That accounts for its tone, which many people still criticize as too light for serious news and more suited to its heavy coverage of celebrities (including politicians), the entertainment industry, and pop culture. It set out to tell the news through people, and for many decades the magazine's cover was of a single person. The first issue of Time was published on March 3, 1923, featuring on its cover Joseph G. Cannon, the retired Speaker of the United States House of Representatives; a facsimile reprint of Issue No. 1, including all of the articles and advertisements contained in the original, was included with copies of the February 28, 1938 issue as a commemoration of the magazine's 15th anniversary. On Hadden's death in 1929, Luce became the dominant man at Time and a major figure in the history of 20th-century media. According to Time Inc. : The Intimate History of a Publishing Enterprise 1972 2004 by Robert Elson, "Roy Edward Larsen [...] was to play a role second only to Luce's in the development of Time Inc." In his book, The March of Time, 1935 1951, Raymond Fielding also noted that Larsen was "originally circulation manager and then general manager of Time, later publisher of Life, for many years president of Time Inc., and in the long history of the corporation the most influential and important figure after Luce." Around the time they were raising US$100, 000 from wealthy Yale alumni like Henry P. Davison, partner of J.P. Morgan & Co., publicity man Martin Egan and J.P. Morgan & Co. banker Dwight Morrow, Henry Luce and Briton Hadden hired Larsen in 1922 although Larsen was a Harvard graduate and Luce and Hadden were Yale graduates. After Hadden died in 1929, Larsen purchased 550 shares of Time Inc., using money he obtained from selling RKO stock which he had inherited from his father, who was the head of the B.F. Keith theatre chain in New England. However, after Briton Hadden's death, the largest Time Inc. stockholder was Henry Luce, who ruled the media conglomerate in an autocratic fashion, "at his right hand was Larsen, " Time Inc. 's second-largest stockholder, according to "Time Inc. : The Intimate History of a Publishing Enterprise 1923 1941". In 1929, Roy Larsen was also named a Time Inc. director and a Time Inc. vice-president. J.P. Morgan retained a certain control through two directorates and a share of stocks, both over Time and Fortune. Other shareholders were Brown Brothers W. A. Harriman & Co., and The New York Trust Company (Standard Oil)....After Time magazine began publishing its weekly issues in March 1923, Roy Larsen was able to increase its circulation by utilizing U.S. radio and movie theaters around the world. It often promoted both "Time" magazine and U.S. political and corporate interests. According to The March of Time, as early as 1924, Larsen had brought Time into the infant radio business with the broadcast of a 15-minute sustaining quiz show entitled Pop Question which survived until 1925." Cover states "For the first time in book form". From Wikipedia; "Jeane L. Dixon (born Lydia Emma Pinckert, January 5, 1904 January 25, 1997) was one of the best-known American Christian astrologers and psychics of the 20th century, due to her syndicated newspaper astrology column, some well-publicized predictions, and a best-selling biography...Dixon was born Lydia Emma Pinckert to German immigrants, Gerhart and Emma Pinckert, in Medford, Wisconsin, but raised in Missouri and California. Dixon's birthdate was often reported as 1918 and Dixon would offer this date to reporters, at one point even producing a passport to this effect, but she once testified in a deposition that she was born in 1910. An investigation by a reporter for the National Observer, who interviewed family members and examined official records, concluded she was born in 1904. In Southern California, her father owned an automobile dealership with Hal Roach, an American film and television producer and director Dixon claimed that while growing up in California, a "gypsy" gave her a crystal ball and read her palm, predicting she would become a famous "seer" and advise powerful people. She was married to James Dixon, a divorced man, from 1939 until his death, but the union was childless. James Dixon was a car dealer in California, who later ran a successful real estate company in Washington DC. Dixon worked with her husband in the business for many years and served as the company's president. Dixon reportedly predicted the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In the May 13, 1956, issue of Parade Magazine she wrote that the 1960 presidential election would be "dominated by labor and won by a Democrat" who would then go on to "[B]e assassinated or die in office though not necessarily in his first term." She later admitted, During the 1960 election, I saw Richard Nixon as the winner, and at the time made unequivocal predictions that JFK would fail to win the election. In the 1956 pronouncement, she merely stated that a President would "be assassinated or die in office", not necessarily that one would be assassinated. By emphasizing a few coincidentally correct predictions and ignoring those that were wrong, she acquired both fame and notoriety. The ability to persuade the public in this matter is known as the 'Jeane Dixon effect'. Dixon was the author of seven books, including her autobiography, a horoscope book for dogs and an astrological cookbook. She gained public awareness through the biographical volume, A Gift of Prophecy: the Phenomenal Jeane Dixon, written by syndicated columnist Ruth Montgomery. Published in 1965, the book sold more than 3 million copies. Despite being married to a divorced man, and although she claimed an ability to foretell the future by gazing into crystal balls, she professed to be a devout Roman Catholic, and she attributed her prophetic ability to God. Another million seller, My Life and Prophecies, was credited "as told to Rene Noorbergen", but Dixon was sued by Adele Fletcher, who claimed that her rejected manuscript was rewritten and published as that book. Fletcher was awarded five percent of the royalties by a jury. President Richard Nixon followed her predictions through his secretary, Rose Mary Woods, and met with her in the Oval Office at least once, in 1971. In 1972, Dixon's prediction of terrorist attacks in America in the wake of the Munich massacre spurred Nixon to set up a cabinet committee on counterterrorism. She was also one of several astrologers who gave advice to Nancy Reagan during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. John Allen Paulos, a mathematician at Temple University, coined the term "the Jeane Dixon effect, " which refers to a tendency to promote a few correct predictions while ignoring a larger number of incorrect predictions. Many of Dixon's predictions proved false, such as her claims that a dispute over the offshore Chinese islands of Quemoy and Matsu would trigger the start of World War III in., Bantam Books, 1970, 3, New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2014. Facsimile autograph (NOT handsigned) by the author (Mariano Rivera) on the title page. [Two copies compared with identical signatures, identically placed on title page.] Mariano Rivera (born November 29, 1969) is a Panamanian-American former professional baseball pitcher who played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees, from 1995 to 2013. Nicknamed "Mo" and "Sandman", Rivera spent most of his career as a relief pitcher and served as the Yankees' closer for 17 seasons. A thirteen-time All-Star and five-time World Series champion, he is MLB's career leader in saves (652) and games finished (952). Rivera won five American League (AL) Rolaids Relief Man Awards and three Delivery Man of the Year Awards, and he finished in the top three in voting for the AL Cy Young Award four times. Rivera was signed by the Yankees organization in Panama in 1990, and he debuted in the major leagues in 1995. Initially a starting pitcher, he was converted to a relief pitcher late in his rookie year. After a breakthrough season in 1996 as a setup man, he became the Yankees' closer in 1997. In the following seasons, he established himself as one of baseball's top relievers, leading the major leagues in saves in 1999, 2001, and 2004. Rivera primarily threw a sharp-moving, mid-90s mile-per-hour cut fastball that frequently broke hitters' bats and earned a reputation as one of the league's toughest pitches to hit. With his presence at the end of games, signaled by his foreboding entrance song "Enter Sandman", Rivera was a key contributor to the Yankees' success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. An accomplished postseason performer, he was named the 1999 World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the 2003 AL Championship Series MVP, and he holds several postseason records, including lowest earned run average (ERA) (0.70) and most saves (42). Rivera is regarded within baseball as one of the most dominant relievers in major league history. Pitching with a longevity and consistency uncommon to the closer role, he saved at least 25 games in 15 consecutive seasons and posted an ERA under 2.00 in 11 seasons, both of which are records. His career 2.21 ERA and 1.00 WHIP are the lowest in the live-ball era among qualified pitchers. Fellow players credit him with popularizing the cut fastball across the major leagues. Along with his signature pitch, Rivera was known for his precise control, smooth pitching motion, and for his composure and reserved demeanor on the field. In 2013, the Yankees retired his uniform number 42; he was the last major league player to wear the number full-time, following its league-wide retirement in honor of Jackie Robinson. Rivera has been involved in philanthropic causes through the Mariano Rivera Foundation. He is considered to be a strong candidate for the Baseball Hall of Fame once he is eligible., Little, Brown and Company, 2014, 3, New York, NY: Warner Books, 1999. First edition. Larger format that usual. Many illustrations in color. From Wikipedia: "Time is an American weekly news magazine published in New York City. According to The March of Time, as early as 1924, Larsen had brought Time into the infant radio business with the broadcast of a 15-minute sustaining quiz show entitled Pop Question which survived until 1925." Then, according to the same book, "In 1928 [...] Larsen undertook the weekly broadcast of a 10-minute programme series., Time Inc, 1997, 2.75, Toronto, Ontario: Toronto, ON: Viking, 1997, 1st Edition, First Printing, 1997. -----------( 1st Printing of the First Edition ) --hardcover, a Near Fine example, in a lightly rubbed Near Fine dustjacket--- 290 pages,--- contents include: The Mountain and the Valley; Man, God and the Godless; The Clans; Esther and the Mountain; White Rock; Sandra Comes in from the Cold; The Clan; A Bad Thing to Do to a Little Girl; Stella's Boys; And the Rest; The Women; The Other Side of the Clan; Conviction; In the Shadow of the South Mountain; Return to South Mountain; Epilogue --- from the front flap ---"The Annapolis Valley is one of the most beautiful places on the face of the earth. Apple blossoms, lush farms and lovely, secluded beaches have graced photographs and postcards without number. But there has been a dark evil within this idyllic land for more than two hundred years. Overlooking the Valley is South Mountain, a long ridge of hills covered by dense forests which conceal tiny hamlets and isolated clusters of shacks set in small clearings. For most of the last two centuries it has been home to the 'Clans' -- thirty or so tight family groupings, living in their various Mountain enclaves [in] the kind of poverty and deprivation associated only with the world's poorest nations. Then one day, a fourteen-year-old Mountain girl told authorities that her father had been 'using her as a wife'. This revelation sparked a massive investigation which revealed a horrific tale of incest, sexual and physical abuse and psychological torture. Eventually, sixteen men and women, almost an entire generation of one Clan, faced more than one hundred and fifty criminal charges. At the same time, eleven children, also an entire generation of the same Clan, were taken from their homes. The Valley's dark secrets are revealed -- in this mesmerizing account of what has gone on behind the picture postcard. For over a century, church officials, academics, politicians, teachers, social workers and doctors knew what was happening on South Mountain --but they chose to look the other way. 'On South Mountain' is more than just an unveiling of the Clan's dark secrets. He is considered to be a strong candidate for the Baseball Hall of Fame once he is eligible., Little, Brown and Company, 2014, 3, University of Chicago Press, Chicago 1997. 25.0 x 22.0cms, 514pp, b/w illusts, very good hardback & dustwrapper The headings are: Le Chaux-de-Fonds (1887-1907); travels & apprenticeships (1907-1911); early professional career (192-1916) the move to Paris (1917-1920), University of Chicago Press, Chicago 1997, 0<
