The painter Georges Seurat was born in 1859 in Paris and died there in 1891. "Dimanche, L'Apres-Midi a I'lle de la Grande Jatte" ("A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte") was his second major work; it was begun in May 1884 and completed two years later. The painting measures 81" x 120" and was created with thousands of dotlike brushstrokes. It was first shown at the Eighth, and last, Impressionist Exhibition in 1886, and currently hangs at The Art Institute of Chicago. At the time Seurat painted it, the island of La Grande Jatte was a meeting place frequented primarily by the working class, although fashionable society apparently liked to pay it occasional covert visits. "Sunday in the Park With George" is a work a fiction inspired by the art of Seurat and what little is known of his life.
