Editorial Reviews From School Libra ry Journal Grade 7-9 This futuristic tale, set sometime after a n uclear holocaust, is about a remaining culture trying to kill a r oaming tiger before the tiger attacks them. They live in the ``sh adow of the bomb'' where ``loners,'' those directly disfigured by radiation exposure, banish themselves from the others. The main character's parents were loners, and near the story's end he and readers learn that they were killed because it was believed that they were responsible for a volcanic eruption and storm which led people to believe the world was at an end. This is a depressing, slow-moving account of life after the bomb. Unlike Gloria Miklow itz' After the Bomb (Scholastic, 1985), the plot is weak; the cha racters are colorless; and readers learn little of how the people really live, eat, intermingle, etc. A mediocre treatment of a su bject about which there is much interest.
