Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.: Shambhala Pubns, 1995. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. NO highlights,NO annotations,NO underlinings..From the Publisher In this book (previously published under the title Living Buddhist Masters), Jack Kornfield presents the heart of Buddhist practice as taught by twelve highly respected masters from Southeast Asia, Here, renowned teachers such as Mahasi Sayadaw, U Ba Khin, Mohnyin Sayadaw, and Achaan Maha Boowa describe a rich variety of meditation techniques-practices that can lead to the dissolution of a limited sense of self, an awakening of insight, compassion for all beings, and the realization of Nirvana. In other chapters, Achaan Chaa, Achaan Buddhadasa, and Sunlun Sayadaw offer practices clarifying the essential attitude that will allow each person to discover the truth of the Buddha's teaching here and now-the living Dharma. The book also provides an introduction to the basic tenets of Buddhism and a look at the Buddhist tradition as taught in Burma, Thailand, and Laos.., Shambhala Pubns, 1995, New Delhi, India: Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., 2003 The paintings in the Buddhist caves of Ajanta (first century BC and fifth century AD) convey unique insights into the life and beliefs of ancient Indians. Alongside, the paintings of Buddhist legends, which aimed to convey Buddhist ethics, the caves also contain scores of non-narrative paintings. Many of them depict the Buddha, the Bodhisatvas, or other Buddhist themes, but the greater portion is made up of images that are only loosely connected to the Buddhist faith: they show lucky charms and auspicious scenes from the worlds of the genies and gods, who showered humans with material wealth rather than assisting them on the path of Nirvana. The book presents line drawings of many of these devotional and ornamental paintings, together with brief summaries of their interpretations. On the basis of literary references, many of the scenes and symbols are identified here for the first time. Printed Pages: 43 with 264 line drawings.. First Edition. Paperback. Hardcover. 1581950020 Editorial Reviews\n\nFrom Publishers Weekly\nWeighing in at 30 pages of text, with an additional 34 pages of Laguarigue's photographs (17 in halftone, 15 in color), Chamoiseau's latest offering is a wisp of a tale, as ephemeral as the Creole spirit-creature it invokes. Inspired by the recollections of workers at the renowned and nearly sacred Saint-Etienne rum distillery of Gros-Morne, Martinique, Chamoiseau lyrically elaborates the story of a benign and beautiful spirit-creature called Elvira, whose mysterious presence haunts the place. Isidore, a simpleton who does menial chores at the distillery, is the first to catch a glimpse of an evanescent something, at the workers' annual rum-tasting. Fated ever after to attempt to recapture the experience, he only manages to be uprooted by raving rum, howling over the lost vision. A few other workers see Elmira, then try to evoke or describe her, only to fail. Possessing a variable beauty, fluid like the ocean lifting its acclamations to the sky, she is known to leave her witnesses not terrified, but dependent forevermore. The unnamed narrator has never seen ElmiraAperhaps, she speculates, because she lacks some degree of innocence, but she herself is a memorable character. More than 100 years old, she is one of the few remaining workers who still holds all the secrets necessary to produce a successful batch of rum. No word is superfluous here, and as in his previous works (Texaco; Solibo Magnificent), Chamoiseau delights the reader with prose that begs to be read aloud. Names like Th?olom?ne, Colocom?de, At?thonaseArecall the luscious tones of Martinican Creole. Supplemented by photographs of the weathered old distillery set deep in palm-covered hills, and by soulful, somber portraits of Gros-Morne residents, this is a small but lovely addition to Chamoiseau's works available in English. Chamoiseau's tongue- in-cheek tale describes the drowsy state of nirvana enjoyed by the long-lived inhabitants of Gros-Morne, home of the Saint- Etienne distillery, where the world's best rum is produced and the inexplicable appearances of an unknown and otherworldly beauty (the eponymous Elmira) seem to preside over, and bless its spiritous bounty. A minor but charming addition to Chamoiseaus exotic and distinctive oeuvre. -- Copyright ?1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. . Fine., Zoland Books, Victor Gollancz. 1995. 1st Edition. Too many rock books--particularly those about the recently, luridly dead-- a re hastily assembled from clippings and feature only the most superficial a ssessment of the artist and music in question. It's a pleasure to report, t hen, that veteran music journalist Christopher Sandford has produced a soli dly researched and coherently argued portrait of Nirvana's front man. The a uthor doesn't flinch from the ugly aspects of Kurt Cobain's personality and lifestyle, nor is he wholly admiring of the music. This critical perspecti ve ultimately makes Cobain more human and his 1994 suicide more tragic. -- This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Book Description Here is the first biography to explore, with shocking detail, the drama that formed this troubled, tragic rock star. Neither an apology nor a condemnation, Kurt Cobain presents a vivid insider's view of the life and death of a man who galvanized a generation and gave birth to the "grunge" revolution with his band Nirvana. Sandford portrays the provocative, small-town rebel with the talent of John Lennon, and then shows him at work on concert stages in Seattle, New York, and London. Readers follow the struggles of Cobain's emotional life-his tumultuous relationships with family and his fellow band members, his drug addiction and sexual appetite, his stormy marriage to Courtney Love, and the birth of his daughter, who, as Cobain wrote in his suicide note, "reminds me too much of who I used to be." During his research, Sandford has had access to Cobain's family, his colleague, Victor Gollancz, 1995, <DIV>Did you know that John Lennon played an Epiphone Casino? She deals with some of the most prevalent behaviors and attitudes, from patriarchal CEO's who say they want honest feedback and then punish those who tell the truth, to corporate cultures where the attitude is 'it will never change around here.'
