A very desirable volume in excellent condition. It includes two vital eighteenth century Pacific voyages. Gilbert?s account provides some of the earliest information on the First Fleet and settlement at Botany Bay, and Bligh?s Narrative recounts one of the most notorious events in the eighteenth-century Pacific. This is Bligh?s own account of the voyage to Tahiti, preceding the official account by two years. Under the direction of lauded botanist Sir Joseph Banks, the Bounty was chartered with the mission to transplant breadfruit saplings from their native Tahiti to slave plantations in the West Indies, where he envisioned them as a cheap source of food for the enslaved workforce. With this in mind, the Bounty had been adapted to provide the best possible accommodation for the breadfruit plants, unfortunately meaning that the cramped quarters occupied by the crew were even more confined than normal. Once the first uncomfortable leg of the journey was completed, the crew enjoyed the tremendous freedoms offered by several months on Tahiti whilst the saplings matured. Returning to such living conditions and the harsh discipline of ship-board life was unacceptable to many of the Bounty?s crew. This coupled with Bligh?s manner towards his officers resulted in the Mutiny on 28th April, 1789, led by Fletcher Christian, wherein Bligh and 18 loyal members of his crew were set adrift in the Bounty?s longboat, and the breadfruit trees were thrown overboard. In one of the greatest known feats of seamanship, Bligh managed to navigate the twenty-three foot longboat 3618 miles from the Friendly Islands to Timor without a chart. Of the eighteen men who accompanied him at the outset, twelve survived the voyage and followed Bligh home in the Dutch fleet. The mutineers themselves returned to Tahiti, whilst Christian and eight of the others subsequently took the Bounty off to Pitcairn Island, where the colony they established remained undiscovered until 1808. Gilbert captained the Charlotte, which was one of six transport ships that comprised the First Fleet, along with the two naval escorts, HMS Sirius and HMS Supply. Having completed that voyage, his instructions were to sail (along with the Scarborough captained by John Marshall) for Canton, and return with a cargo of tea. Thus he led the first trading voyage out of Botany Bay. During the course of the voyage the Gilbert and Ellis (later Marshall) Islands were discovered. The author, in his introduction, gives a short account of the First Fleet voyage & mentions the ?abandoned and desperate characters? who were his cargo. Indeed, it is complete with the advertisement for John White?s Journal of a Voyage to Botany-Bay, in New South Wales . which Gilbert recommends for an account of the voyage from England to Botany Bay. The breadfruit, a species of flowering mulberry tree native to Southeast Asia and most of the Pacific Islands, had first been brought back to Europe from Tahiti by Sir Joseph Banks in 1770. It was at the instigation of Banks, who had recognised the breadfruit's enormous potential as a staple food product, and in particular as an economical means of feeding slaves, that Lieutenent William Bligh's ill-fated 1787 expedition to Tahiti in the Bountywas mounted. Bligh's brief was to collect as many samples of breadfruit as possible with the intention of propagating them in the Caribbean. Bligh's narrative commenceson April 29, 1789, shortly after the Bounty's departure from Tahiti. Led by Fletcher Christian, 24 of the ship's crew mutinied; Bligh and 18 loyal men were cast adrift in the ship's launch. Over the course of the next 45 days Bligh succeeded in navigating westward across 4,000 miles of ocean in the tiny boat, by way of the northern coast of Australia and the Torres Strait, eventually reaching the island of Timor at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago."In the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it" (Wantrup). On his return to England, Bligh was acquitted at a court-martial and promoted to Commander. He was to lead a second expedition to the Pacific in 1791-93 which succeeded in transporting breadfruit from Tahiti to the Caribbean.
