This collection of poems, prose, plays, and sketches includes the story "A Night Among the Horses", which made Barnes's name among her expatriate peers in Paris. For this publication, she received her first accusations of lesbianism, which she later memorably denied with the statement, "I'm not a lesbian, I just loved Thelma". The collection was twice reissued with alternative titles and revised content, as A Night Among the Horses (1929) and Spillway (1962). Andrew Field, Djuna: The Life and Times of Djuna Barnes, 1983. Square octavo. Original dark blue boards, paper spine label, bottom edge untrimmed. With dust jacket. Frontispiece and 5 plates on grey paper stock after portrait sketches by the author.
