[ED: 1], chevalier america united states history america travel, 8vo, 20cm, in 2 volumes. First edition. xv, [1], 470, [2](Errata) & 527, [1](Errata)pp., complete with half-titles and one folding map outlined in colour, title vignettes, contemporary marbled boards simulating tree calf, (known as boxed cloth) red leather labels, bookplates, paper labels removed on the foot of the spines, front board corner bumped, a near fine sound copy. (amp). Howes C-367. Sabin 12585. Monaghan 422. Michel Chevalier (1806-1879) was a French political economist who, in his early years, became a convert to Saint-Simonism, a doctrine of socialism which was based on the precepts of Claude Henri de Rouvroy Saint-Simon (1760-1825) and which became for a time a near-religion among its followers. Chevalier was arrested in 1832 when his editorship of the Globe, the organ of the Saint-Simonians, caused him to be charged with outraging public morality. Through the intervention of Thiers he was given a short sentence and then sent by Thiers on a mission to the United States to "study the railroads". He arrived in 1833, and remained until October 1835. Chevalier successfully completed his objectives and ended up feeling very comfortable in America. He tried to promote relations between France and the United States whenever he could. At first, he addressed his letters on North America to the Journal des Debats which won him a reputation as a writer. "These letters were republished and form about a third of the text of Les Lettres sur L'Am'rique...Among his contemporaries he enjoyed a reputation equal to that of his two distinguished contemporaries, de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont. He remains one of the most important French commentators on the United States." (Monaghan). , [PU: Paris. Librairie de Charles Gosselin. 1836]<
