When the tidings were brought to the prelate, he fulminated sentence of major excommunication not only against the under-sheriff but against all the men who had acted under the sheriffs orders; and the excommunication was proclaimed in due form, at Barnstaple, by two priors and the parson of a Devonshire church. The bishop and his subordinates were summoned to answer for this act of contempt, and did in the end so far obey the law as to appear by attorney in the Kings Bench.
