After starting work as a trainee animator and a lucky break as an extra in his first movie, he went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), but left after one year to pursue his acting career in the theatre. He went to America in the early 1950s and was contracted to MGM and then Warner Brothers Studios, where he starred in several TV series and films. Two British TV series - The Saint and The Persuaders! - then made him a household name in the 1960s and 1970s and in 1973 he starred in his first James Bond movie, Live and Let Die. He played 007 in another six Bond movies and is one of the most admired Bonds in over fifty years of the franchise. Appointed Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF in 1991, he was knighted for his services to charity in 2003.
