In all these they were more or less disappointed, and during the period now under review the salvation of the Province came from two sources absolutely unexpected: the discovery of vast mineral deposits in the Broken Hill district of New South Wales which lay close to the South Australian border, and the discovery of gold in Western Australia.Early in 187 3 the discovery of gold was reported in the Northern Territory, and a number of companies were formed in Adelaide to work the deposits, which rumour had greatly magnified.
