From the jacket--When the Bauhaus was founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius in Weimar, it was with the aim to combine art and craft. It created workshops for furniture, pottery, weaving, printmaking, mural painting, glass and metal design. The idea of being trained in these areas, inspired many young women to such an extent that they applied for admission in droves. Gropius feared that the students would associate the school with feminine handicraft, and this could harm the reputation. They sent the women, therefore, preferably into the school for weaving. Their intrusion into other areas called for a great self-confidence and they also must be significantly better than their male colleagues in their work. Though the artistic works of these unusual women were long ignored or were over the decades all but forgotten, the Bauhaus spawned master female weavers, potters interior, stage designers, architects, photographers, furniture and metal designers of exceptionally high artistic power and quality. Ulrike Muller pays tribute with this book the first time the power of women at the Bauhaus in all creative fields and presents in their portraits of life and work., Elisabeth Sandmann Verlag, 2009
