Euroscepticism in EU Candidate Countries: Variability in Political Elite Resistance to EU Accession in the Czech Republic and Slovakia - Taschenbuch

2003, ISBN: 3639246292

Paperback, [EAN: 9783639246292], VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, Book, [PU: VDM Verlag Dr. Müller], VDM Verlag Dr. Müller, This book examines forms of discursive resistance to joining the European Union on a part of political elites from East Central Europe. Based on an analysis of party manifestos from 1990-2003 and 60 in-depth interviews with Czech and Slovak parliamentarians in 2000, the study provides a comprehensive consideration of the most heated issues during the years leading up to EU accession and reveals major shifts in the quality and directions of debate about European integration. Among the study?s findings is that oppositional stances in post-communist countries mobilising to join the EU were different from anti-European positions in existing member states. In countries that were seeking to "return to Europe" after decades of totalitarian repression, political "euroscepticism" is interwoven with strands of ambiguity as to the prospects of what integration in this new, market-based "world order" might mean for small nations on the European periphery, as well as sometimes opportunistic manipulation of the public?s fears of losing national identity and sovereignty., 11232, Social Sciences, 3048861, Children's Studies, 13022421, Communication & Media Studies, 11005, Criminology, 11244, Customs & Traditions, 11247, Demography, 10555, Disaster Relief, 11251, Emigration & Immigration, 11256, Folklore & Mythology, 11258, Gender Studies, 11270, Gerontology, 10775, Holidays, 11272, Human Geography, 69845, Library & Information Science, 11986, Linguistics, 11274, Methodology, 16233621, Museum Studies & Museology, 11276, Philanthropy & Charity, 4556, Popular Culture, 11280, Pornography, 10576, Poverty, 11282, Reference, 11284, Research, 11286, Social Work, 11298, Specific Demographics, 11324, Urban Planning & Development, 3825161, Violence in Society, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468214, Social Sciences, 491448, Anthropology, 491450, Archaeology, 491452, Criminology, 491460, Gay & Lesbian Studies, 491458, Gender Studies, 491454, Geography, 684299011, Military Sciences, 491464, Political Science, 491490, Psychology, 491478, Sociology, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books
