Sam and Myrna Myers are two Americans who decided to settle in Paris in the mid-sixties, and where they built up a fabulous collection bringing together some 5,000 works over 50 years, among which Asia takes pride of place. It all began in 1966, with the meeting of Dr. Rosenbaum, gallery owner-antique dealer, who made them realize that despite their modest means, they could acquire authentic old pieces. They then invested in four small pieces, continuing the following year with the purchase of an Egyptian basalt head and thus displaying their determination to engage in the world of collecting. This devouring passion will never leave them. Everywhere, they go to antique dealers, visit museums, go to fairs. They bring together some beautiful, surprising objects, often disparate, creating a sort of cabinet of curiosities. A few pieces reveal their extraordinary intuition, but they soon understand that they need to deepen their knowledge. Myrna enrolls at the École du Louvre, completes the entire course and acquires the essential tools. Four main lines emerge today from this relentless quest, giving it substance and coherence. Firstly, there is an impressive series of archaic Chinese jades, followed by outstanding works of Buddhism from Eastern Asia, to which are added astonishing blue-and-white porcelains, most of them from the seabed. , the ensemble being completed by a dazzling array of ancient costumes, from Uzbekistan to Edo Japan. These four groupings quite naturally constitute the structure of the work: Radiant Stones; Icons and fabrics; Ocean porcelain and Costumes and customs., LIENART, 2016, 6, Carbondale & Edwardsville: Southern Illinois University Press. Text in French.
