Hartford: printed by Hudson & Co, 1817. Thick 12mo, pp. [810], text in double column; full contemporary speckled paneled sheep; very good. With an early printed leaf of ownership inserted at the beginning, reading "Sarah Sawyer. / Book / Sarah Sawyer. / Book / Winstead" (i.e. Winstead, CT), and with a manuscript note at the bottom "given to her by her grandmother." Hills, English Bible in America, 335: "Reprint of the Hudson & Goodwin edition of 1809.", printed by Hudson & Co, 1817, Hamburgi [Hamburg]: Sumptu Theodori Christoph. Felginer, 1722. RARE book by the celebrated German classical scholar and bibliographer Johann Albert Fabricius (1668-1736), who is credited with 128 books. He was an eminent bibliographer and collector of manuscripts, and many of his volumes are compilations, editions, or anthologies. This book is a testimony to Fabricius' influence in articulating current scholarly notions of the "Old Testament Pseudepigrapha" and "New Testament Apocrypha", through his many comprehensive collections of texts and excerpts. Contains the author's portrait as frontispiece. 180x125mm. 1174 pages [with additional unpaginated XXX+28 pages]. Half-cloth rebound Hardcover. Cover and spine rubbed and scratched. Cover edges rubbed/worn. Front cover and spine stained. Front cover bottom corner bumped and worn. Cover corners rubbed. Spine edges bumped. Title and author's name handwritten on spine. Front inner cover upper right corner peeling. Pencil inscriptions on front whitepage. Ex-libris sticker on frontispiece verso with the previous owners name - James G. Heller (1892-1971) - an American composer and rabbi. Binding slightly visible between frontispiece and title page (otherwise binding tight). Text block edges dyed black. Whitepages stained. Pages 618-623 and few other page edges slightly stained (burn marks?) - NO damage to text. Pages wavy and browning/age-stained. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book is in good reading condition and in good condition for its age., Sumptu Theodori Christoph. Felginer, 1722, Oxford: Printed at the University Press by Samuel Collingwood and Co., 1836. Small, thick octavo. Contemporary calf. Somewhat edgeworn, but sound, remnants of fore-clasps, front endsheet and title reinserted and a bit ragged; various ownership inscriptions (see below) and use; a sound copy. Editions of no particular consequence, but in a contemporary binding with a large blind stamped panel on the upper board with the text: "The Gift of Philip Late Lord Wharton Distributed by His Lordships Trustees 1838." Affixed to the front pastedown is a printed slip outlining the terms and conditions of the gift, reading in part: "Lord Wharton having directed that the Name and Age of the Children, to whom the Bibles are given, shall be wrote in the book; the Trustees require it be so done; and the Child shall be taught to read, and be able to say by Heart the Catechism ...[etc]." A manuscript note indicates "The Gift of Lord Wharton ... Feby. 3d. 1839." Above it appears the inscription: "Emma Cave Aged 12 Feby. 3d 1839." Opposite, on the free endsheet appears the ownership signature of "Elizabeth Ann Cave Aged 11." Sadly, on the rear pastedown is the early note: "Emma Cave Born May 23rd 1830 and died April 7th 1842 Aged 13 [sic]." The gift Trust was established by Lord Wharton in his will at his death in 1696, and the Trust continues to some extent in the endeavor. One presumes many thousands from this era remain extant, but the binding is of passing interest. GRIFFITHS 1836.11., Printed at the University Press by Samuel Collingwood and Co., 1836, mp; 1727-New York -Samuelem Luchtmans, 1735 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two well preserved and scarce religoustexts in Latinbound in one. 'Glossarium Graecum in Sacros Novi Foederis Libros Ex Mss' and 'Joannis Alberti Periculum Criticum In Quo Loca Quaedam Cum Veteris Ac Novi Foederis Tum Hesychii & Aliorum Illustrantur Indicantur, Emendantur'. Glossary of Greek manuscripts of the sacred books of the New Covenant and a criticallookat the Old and New Testament. Includes index, addresses to the reader and dedication to Men of the Church of Hamburg, John Christopher and Albert Fabricius who was a professor of rhetoric and moral philosophy and theology. In 1721, Joannes Albertiwas confirmed as minister in Hoogwoud; here, he collected from heathen texts passages and sayings that were similar to those used in the Greek language New Testament to defend the style of the Evangelists and Apostles against those who considered their style as poor and full of Hebrew sayings. This work highlights some aspects of the holy books, when compared with other Greek writers, explaining where needed the language used in the Old Testament and indicating the best reading according to Alberti, without ignoring the explanations of other theologians. He was widely known to be an excellent theologian and one of the best scholars of Biblical hermeneutics of his time. Condition: In a full vellum binding. Externally, sound with fading. There is a library label and library number to the tail of the spine and also mark to spine from previous label. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown 'Bequethed to the Bishoprie of Cornwall by the Reverent Franke Parker, Rector of Luffincott, Devon. Latin text on the upper half of the page, the commentary in 2 columns on the lower part) (Condition: Binding scuffed. Back rubbed. Corners slightly bumped. Bookplate on the front pastedown. 2 ownership entries on the front flyleaf. A few old ink annotations) (Note: The dialogue De Natura Deorum of the Roman orator and politician Marcus Tullius Cicero, 106-43 B.C., begins with a sketch of the history of the subject, the nature of the gods. In 3 books Cicero discusses the Epicurean, Academic and Stoic view on the matter. The dialogue contains interesting speculations of Greek philosophers now lost to us. The English scholar Sir John Davies, or Joannes Davisius, 1679-1732, the producer of this edition, which was first published in 1718, was once considered to be one of the best commentators on Cicero. He studied at Queens College, of which he was elected fellow, and subsequently became Rector, or Praeses in 1717. He chiefly devoted his attention to the philosophical works of Cicero. His editions show great learning and knowledge of the history of and the systems of ancient philosophy. Davies also produced editions of Maximus Tyrus, Caesar, Minucius Felix and Lactantius. He was a friend and ally of Richard Bentley, Master of Trinity College. It is to this genius that he dedicates his book. Monk, the biographer of Bentley, says that his devotion came little short of idolatry. (Monk, 'The Life of Richard Bentley', London 1833, vol. 2, p. 115/6). Moss does Davies certainly wrong with his judgement that this edition is a kind of 'Variorum edition', the kind of edition which offers the 'textus receptus' accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of specialists, taken from earlier useful, normative or renewing editions. Editions like these, 'cum notis Variorum', were useful, but never broke new ground. On the contrary, Davies consulted new manuscripts, with the help, among others, of Richard Bentley. Davies proudly states in his praefatio that 'nam, quod praefiscine dictum sit, aut MSStorum aut ingenii subsidio, hunc Ciceronis foetum pluribus liberavi vitiis, quam omnes omnino, qui praeiverant, interpretes'. (Praefatio *4 recto) He also used the 'animadversiones' which were sent to him by the Dutch classicist Johannes Clericus. At the end of the book, after the 'index auctorum', we find 29 pages filled with emendations of the Cambridge classical scholar John Walker, 1692(?)-1741, who was a coadjutor of the same Richard Bentley. The young man's firstfruits are these emendations on Cicero's 'De Natura Deorum'. They are considered to be bold and ingenious, after the manner of Bentley, and they show a wide range of reading. Afterwards Walker helped Bentley collating manuscripts for a proposed Graeco-Latin edition of the New Testament, a project which was never completed) (Provenance: The provenance seems to be English. The bookplate of one 'Robert Edward Way' decorates the front pastedown: it shows a moonlit knight sitting at the border of a lake. He leans on his shield with the coat of arms of the family Way. § On the flyleaf first: 'Jacobus Angier, 1743'. § Then: 'Henry Marsham, October 14th 1806') (Collation: *8, A-2D8, 2E2) (Photographs on request), Dearborn, Michigan: The Dearborn Publishing Co..
