Antonia Gransden:
A History of the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds, 1182-1256: Samson of Tottington to Edmund of Walpole (Studies in the History of Medieval Religion) - gebunden oder broschiert

2007, ISBN: 1843833247

[SR: 668314], Hardcover, [EAN: 9781843833246], Boydell Press, Boydell Press, Book, [PU: Boydell Press], 2007-12-06, Boydell Press, St Edmund's Abbey was one of the most highly privileged and wealthiest religious houses in medieval England, one closely involved with the central government, and its history is an integral part of English history. This book (the first of two volumes) offers a magisterial and comprehensive account of the Abbey during the thirteenth century, based primarily on evidence in the abbey's records (over 40 registers survive). The careers of the abbots, beginning with the great Samson, provide the chronological structure; separate chapters study various aspects of their rule, such as their relations with the convent, the abbey's internal and external administration and its relations with its tenants and neighbors, with the king and the central government. Chapters are also devoted to the monks' religious, cultural and intellectual life, to their writings, book collection, and archives. Appendices focus on the mid-thirteenth century accounts which give a unique and detailed picture of the organization and economy of St Edmunds' estates in West Suffolk, and on the abbey's watermills, and windmills. Professor Antonia Gransden is former Reader at the University of Nottingham., 266302, Religious Buildings, 512758, Types of Architecture, 266240, Architecture, 91, Art, Architecture & Photography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271352, Anglo-Saxon 500-1000, 271343, Britain & Ireland, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271344, Norman and Medieval 1001-1500, 271343, Britain & Ireland, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 771744, Black Death, 271343, Britain & Ireland, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 4117771, Ireland, 271343, Britain & Ireland, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271488, Vikings, Dark Ages, Medieval Europe 501-1500, 271480, Europe, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772162, Cultural History, 772188, Local & Urban History, 772192, London, 271405, Multicultural History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772040, Other Religions, 771714, Religious History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772000, 501-1500, 771718, World History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 277549, History, 277544, Religious Studies, 58, Religion & Spirituality, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books
