Caesar's Column By Ignatius Donnelly filled with the perfume of many flowers, and bright with the scintillating plumage of darting birds; all sounds of sweetness fill the air, and many glorious, star-eyed maidens, guests of the hotel, wander half seen amid the foliage, like the houris in the Mohammedan's heaven. But as I found myself growing hungry I descended to the dining-room. It is three hundred feet long: a vast multitude were there eating in perfect silence. It is considered bad form to interrupt digestion with speech, as such a practice tends to draw the vital powers, it is said, away from the stomach to the head. Our forefathers were expected to shine in conversation, and be wise and witty while gulping their food between brilliant passages. I sat down at a table to which I was marshaled by a grave and reverend seignior in an imposing uniform. As I took my seat my weight set some machinery in motion. A few feet in front of me suddenly rose out of the table a large upright mirror, or such I took it to be; but instantly there appeared We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Published in 1890, Caesar's Column is an account of a trip to New York City in 1988 by a visitor from the Swiss colony of Uganda. The great metropolis dazzles with its futuristic technology, but its ostentatous wealth and luxury mask the brutal repression of the laboring classes by their rich bosses. Aided by international terrorists, the workers stage a violent revolt, and the narrator flees the devastated city by airship to found an agrarian utopia in Africa. Fueled by outrage at social conditions, Caesar's Column was the first major dystopian novel in the English language. Its author, Ignatius Donnelly, was the most famous -- and controversial -- American populist politician of the day, and his book became a huge bestseller and was often compared to such utopian works as Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward (1888) andd William Morris's News from Nowhere (1890). This Wesleyan edition includes an insightful introduction and useful notes by Nicholas Ruddick. Digital Content>E-books>Sf,Fantasy>Science Fiction>Science Fiction, eBooksLib Digital >16<

First published in 1890, Caesar’s Column, a romance of the future, is a protest against what seemed to its author, Ignatius Donnelly, the evils inherent in corporate bigness. By 1988 the United States is to be dehumanized, and only a secret Brotherhood of Destruction can overthrow an American Fascist regime. But the Brotherhood of Destruction proves to be even more tyrannical, so that the narrator has to fly for his life to Africa, where republican virtue persists. Caesar’s Column is a fascinating example of the anti-utopia, a form of narrative lately represented by Huxley’s Brave New World and Orwell’s 1984; its historical interest lies not only in its theme but also in its reflection and interpretation of social and political ideas current at the end of the nineteenth century.
