[EAN: 9781403934840], Neubuch, [PU: Palgrave Macmillan, UK], POLITICS & GOVERNMENT BZDB395 FINANCE, PUBLIC -- TANZANIA, FISCAL POLICY DEWEY: 336.014678 GOVERNMENT; LOCAL FINANCIAL REFORM IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES THE CASE OF TANZANIA, Political Science|Public Policy|Economic Policy, Social Science|Third World Development, Business & Economics|Finance, Available Now. Book Description: Poverty reduction on African continent represents a major development challenge. Since key government services such as basic education and health services are often delivered at the local government level, a successful poverty reduction strategy would be virtually impossible without the reform of local government finances. One big problem is that there is a lack of good examples of decentralization and local government finance reform in Africa.: Although Uganda has often been touted as one of the big reformers in local government finance in Africa in the 1990s, ongoing local government finance reforms in Tanzania are garnering increasing interest in policy circles. Although Tanzanian local governments have played a significant role in the delivery of key government services since the 1980s, until recently the central government tightly controlled most of the financial resources available to the local government level. Yet in recent years, the Government of Tanzania has taken significant steps in reforming its system of local government finances. : This book presents a comprehensive overview and detailed analysis of Tanzania's local government finance reforms, and draws lessons for other developing economies that wish to engage in fiscal decentralization reforms. : About the Author: JAMESON BOEX is a Research Professor of Economics at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University, USA, and has been closely involved in local government finance reforms in Tanzania since 2002. He specializes in the analysis of intergovernmental transfer arrangements and has led and contributed to policy reforms and research projects on intergovernmental fiscal relations, tax policy and fiscal management issues in twelve transitional and developing countries.: JORGE MARTINEZ-VAZQUEZ is a Professor of Economics and Director of the International Studies Programme at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University, USA. He enjoys worldwide recognition as a leading expert on fiscal decentralization, tax policy and administration, and fiscal management, and has directed, managed and served as a senior economist on policy reform projects in over 30 countries around the world.
