I have been requested to add to the valuable work of Mr. Toynbee on Diseases of the Ear a brief state ment of the advances which have been made, Since it was published, in the branch of medicine of which it treats. The task is a most welcome one, knowing as I did the zeal and sagacity with which Mr. Toynbee's researches were carried out, and honouring, as I cannot but honour, his memory. I can only hope that the additions are not utterly unworthy of the' volume; of the remarkable worth of which a fresh. Perusal has convinced me the more. It is indeed, as must have been the case, in a few points inexact, and in some others incomplete when judged by the prev sent state of' our knowledge. I have sought to the best of my ability to add whatever is necessary to make it a faithful, though a very brief, representative of all that is certainly known on the practical aspects of the subject. In no other volume that I am acquaint-r ed with is there contained an equally profound and exhaustive account of the physiological and patholo gical data on which the treatment of aural diseases rests, and much of that which I have added consists, ass the reader will see, of new facts and new applications.
