The summaries of the statistics of secondary schools are still presented in full, the omitted portion being only that which gives particular information concerning each school separately. As a matter of general convenience these details are omitted from the annual report. The question as to publishing them separately in an issue of the Bulletin of tho Bureau of Education is now under consideration. This compression of the statistical matter contained in the report has made it possible to bring all of that matter into the compass of the second volume. As a matter of convenience, accordingly, the general survey and analysis of the statistical tables, which has usually formed a part of the Commissioner s introduction, will form in this report a special introductory chapter in the second volume. The preparation of such an analytic survey and summary of the statistics of the year has been committed to the hands of Prof. Edward L. Thorndike, of Teachers College, Columbia University.
