American Politicians presents a marvellous collection of images, from Mathew Brady's indelible portraits of Abraham Lincoln to the carefully staged "photo opportunities" of today. Among them are icons of political photography-Calvin Coolidge wearing a Native American headdress, Fiorello La Guardia reading comics over the radio, Harry Truman playing piano for Lauren Bacall, Lyndon Johnson displaying the scar from his surgery. Also reproduced are many rare photographs of both prominent and obscure practitioners of the rites of American politics, caught unrelentingly by the camera. The pictures have been selected from an array of public and private collections, including those of the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, the Museum of the City of New York, the New-York Historical Society, the Chicago Historical Society, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the archives of photo agencies, newspapers, and magazines. Susan Kismaric, Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, relates the fascinating history of how photography has pictured, and helped to transform, American politics. Since the 184os, when daguerreotypes of political figures were first made in the United States, the circumstances of photographing them have radically changed. The relationship between the politician and the photographer, formerly one of cooperation and mutual benefit, has become an open tug-of-war: the politician wants to project a carefully calculated image, while the photographer is in pursuit of "truth." Kismaric explains the technological changes that accompanied this development, from the carefully posed political portrait of the nineteenth century to the news photo of today made using a camera with motor-driven film advance, transmitted by satellite, and, sometimes, manipulated by computer. She considers such issues as how political photographs have been disseminated, how picture agencies and wire services developed, and the rise and decline of the magazine photo essay as television became politicians' principal image-creating tool. A major theme of her book is that increasingly sophisticated control by politicians of their images, coupled with more restricted access to prominent figures in the wake of political assassinations in the 1g6os, has made it more and more difficult for photographers to get close enough, physically and psychologically, to make compelling pictures of our leaders. ., Museum of Modern Art, 1994, LONDON.VIRGIN,1995. While most collections of sayings relate to simple societies, and involve camels and the eyes of needles and so on, Dr Tan Boon Tee lifts the lid on modern life - in all its glories and grimness. Here are pithy observations on computers, cars, warfare, wealth, private medicine, modern art, physics, families and urban living. If Dr Tan is occasionally a tad cynical, it is because he has led a full life, and tasted the bitter as well as the sweet. Take this comment on one of our finest institutions: The words gambol and gamble have the same pronunciation. One is joyful play and the other is a risky adventure. Somehow, marriage is sandwiched between them. . . Intrigued Read on, as Dr Tan suggests, at your own pace, and enjoy these reflections on our changing times with a curious mind and a light heart. In this pioneering work on subliminal commu-nications, he analyzes how the media is being manipulated at the expense of innocent by-standers who receive hidden signals without being aware of the fraud. This abuse is espe-cially prominent through the use of inductive erotic images such as the popular character of Smooth character Camel. His book goes beyond the subliminal implications of erotic art. Embedding subliminally encoded messages has been a practice of great artists, as it is a practice in the modern days of print, celluloid and computer media. Spin the record backward and you will get a secret message; play it regularly, and the same message may be getting to your subconscious. Among the many artists and famous personae studied in this book, Dr. Key shows a spe-cial preference for individuals such as da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rubens, Rembrandt, Picasso, and many more. Mr. Mushet mentions that in 1839 the proprietor of the Airdrie estate derived a royalty of 16, 500l. from the mineral, which had not before its discovery yielded him one farthing. At the same time, many fortunes have been made by pushing and energetic men who have of late years entered upon this new branch of industry. Amongst these may be mentioned the Bairds of Gartsherrie, who vie with the Guests and Crawshays of South Wales, and have advanced themselves in the course of a very few years from the station of small farmers to that of great capitalists owning estates in many counties, holding the highest character as commercial men, and ranking among the largest employers of labour in the kingdom.
