THE BIBLE--ITS UNITY AND AUTHORITY. In their lamentable essay on Inspiration and Revelation, the three "Friends" succeed in showing us the extremely low standard by which they judge of the Scripture, and of the Holy Spirit. The reader who has perused their remarks on God manifest in the Spirit, can hardly have been prepared for this. It reminds me of what my father told me nearly half a century since of his having explained to a French gentleman the views held by the Society of Friends with regard to the Holy Spirit, and how he was met by the Frenchman telling him that he quite believed in this doctrine,while on closer inquiry his faith proved to be merely a belief in the light of Reason. The general tenor of this essay is to lower the meaning of inspiration to this standard. Reason, and intellectual faculties are the common gifts of God to all Humanity, but the Light which enlightens every man that cometh into the world, shines in a dark place, where the darkness comprehendeth it not, until the Spirit of the man is quickened to apprehend it. "Unless a man be born of Water and the Spirit, he cannot see the Kingdom of God." "Ye must be born from above. The Spirit breatheth where it will ard thou hearest the voice thereof, but know est not whence it cometh, nor whither it goeth." No one would suppose from this essay that the "friends" had ever read these words. They commence by saying: "Inspiration has been well defined to be 'the immediate action of the Divine Spirit upon the human mind: the presence of God in the soul to illume it.' Revelation is the effect of this enlightening process in making known things otherwise unseen and unimagined by the natural Man."
