Race and the Education of Desire: Foucault's History of Sexuality and the Colonial Order of Things - Taschenbuch

It has had an enormous impact on cultural studies and work across many disciplines on gender, sexuality, and the body. Bringing a new set of questions to this key work, Ann Laura Stoler examines volume one of History of Sexuality in an unexplored light. She asks why there has been such a muted engagement with this work among students of colonialism for whom issues of sexuality and power are so essential. Why is the colonial context absent from Foucault’s history of a European sexual discourse that for him defined the bourgeois self? In Race and the Education of Desire, Stoler challenges Foucault’s tunnel vision of the West and his marginalization of empire. She also argues that this first volume of History of Sexuality contains a suggestive if not studied treatment of race.Drawing on Foucault’s little-known 1976 College de France lectures, Stoler addresses his treatment of the relationship between biopower, bourgeois sexuality, and what he identified as “racisms of the state.” In this critical and historically grounded analysis based on cultural theory and her own extensive research in Dutch and French colonial archives, Stoler suggests how Foucault’s insights have in the past constrained—and in the future may help shape—the ways we trace the genealogies of race.Race and the Education of Desire will revise current notions of the connections between European and colonial historiography and between the European bourgeois order and the colonial treatment of sexuality. Arguing that a history of European nineteenth-century sexuality must also be a history of race, it will change th, 11209, Sexuality, 11119, Psychology & Counseling, 10, Health, Fitness & Dieting, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4837, Native American, 4808, Americas, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 16252731, Southeast Asia, 4884, Asia, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 6512001011, Sexuality, 6511980011, Psychology, 173514, Medical Books, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11019, Philosophy, 11021, Aesthetics, 15811681, Analytic Philosophy, 11023, Consciousness & Thought, 886132, Criticism, 11025, Eastern, 11035, Epistemology, 11037, Ethics & Morality, 11041, Free Will & Determinism, 11045, Good & Evil, 11047, Greek & Roman, 11049, History & Surveys, 13922602011, Individual Philosophers, 11053, Logic & Language, 11054, Medieval Thought, 11055, Metaphysics, 15811591, Methodology, 11057, Modern, 11059, Modern Renaissance, 886134, Movements, 11065, Political, 11070, Reference, 11072, Religious, 15811601, Social Philosophy, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11232, Social Sciences, 3048861, Children's Studies, 13022421, Communication & Media Studies, 11005, Criminology, 11244, Customs & Traditions, 11247, Demography, 10555, Disaster Relief, 11251, Emigration & Immigration, 11256, Folklore & Mythology, 11258, Gender Studies, 11270, Gerontology, 10775, Holidays, 11272, Human Geography, 16926972011, Human Sexuality, 69845, Library & Information Science, 11986, Linguistics, 11274, Methodology, 16233621, Museum Studies & Museology, 11276, Philanthropy & Charity, 4556, Popular Culture, 11280, Pornography, 10576, Poverty, 11764690011, Privacy & Surveillance, 11282, Reference, 11284, Research, 11286, Social Work, 11298, Specific Demographics, 11324, Urban Planning & Development, 3825161, Violence in Society, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11235, Cultural, 11233, Anthropology, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 69837, History, 69829, Education Theory, 5267708011, Schools & Teaching, 8975347011, Education & Teaching, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 491412, Asia, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 468232, Philosophy, 491424, Aesthetics, 684279011, Epistemology, 491426, Ethics, 491428, History & Surveys, 684280011, Logic, 491432, Metaphysics, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491490, Psychology, 491492, Clinical Psychology, 684296011, Cognitive Psychology, 491496, Developmental Psychology, 684297011, Neuropsychology, 684298011, Psychopathology, 491494, Psychotherapy, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491448, Anthropology, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

Race and the Education of Desire: Foucault?s"history of Sexuality" and the Colonial Order of Things

"Ann Stoler combines impressive historical and ethnographic scholarship with moral fervor to turn Foucault's definition of critique as the 'art of reflective insolence' back on his own work. A controversial "tour de force"!"--Paul Rabinow, University of California, Berkeley
