London England: British Broadcasting Corporation. Good. 1975. 1st Paperback Edition. Soft Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0563109688 Paperback Paperback. Crease to corner back cover. Slight foxing to end inside covers. This book examines in some detail three episodes in British industrial history and endeavours to set them in their social and political context. It makes no claim to be a history of the working class during the period covered, nor, in the three periods examined, to deal with any group of worthers other than those directly involved in them. Since all these were town-dwellers, the book is concerned solety with urban life and industrial unions; the situation, and problems of the agricultural labourer, though full of interest in their own right, are outside its scope. Contents: Introduction. An End to Thse Unions. Three Cheers For Genral Ludd. The Docker's Tanner. Class War on the Clyde. Collective Bargaining Freely Conducted. Illustrated. 159 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) ., British Broadcasting Corporation, 1975, Public affairs Department Iron Ore BHP-Utah Minerals International, 1988. Description: INTRODUCTION: Out of purple-red rock, formed aeons ago, comes the steel skeleton of the modern world. Iron ore, some of the richest found anywhere, mined on a remote Pilbara mountain, later becomes cars and keys, forks and flushings, pipes and paperclips. It is easy to overlook the cheap ease with which the tools and trappings of modern life can be acquired, the way millions enjoy products that once could be afforded by only the wealthy. The first motor cars cost $150 000 in terms of modern purchasing power, steel was once a high cost material. The modern miracle, to which Mt Whaleback is a monument, is the ready access to materials like iron ore, the way it can be mined and moved across the world at a price that makes it - and in turn steel - accessible as finished products to almost everybody. It was not so even two decades ago. Only the mining, railing and shipping technologies developed in the 1960s greatly reduced the cost of raw materials like iron ore. In the case of Mt Newman, accessibility seemed to be an insuperable problem. Picture a landscape hardly explored by Europeans, harsh, unforgiving and difficult to traverse. Some of the mountains were reddish in colour, indicating the presence of haematite, a form of iron (the name derived from the Greek work haema, meaning blood). But so remote were they that, in the words of an early geologist, "they might have been on the moon". Boldness and persistence, qualities which have nothing to do with modern technology, contradicted him. The combination that has so often brought great rewards in Australia, the rugged individualism of a lone prospector, the array of expertise available to big companies, defeated that landscape. Mt Newman Mining, through its participants, faced a deceptively simple brief: Break up a mountain, and carry it to the sea. The preamble was the discovery of the mountain, months of sweaty effort in measuring its wealth, and further discouraging effort to find the money for the task; "21 months of agony", in the words of a State Government Minister at the time. The "agony" was worthwhile. The planning and construction of the venture was hailed throughout the world as an engineering achievement of the highest order. The scale of the project was breathtaking, especially when it continued to grow rapidly after its commissioning in 1969. The shipping by 1988 of 500 million tonnes of ore - a sizeable part of that mountain - is an achievement that should be noted by all those who use pipes and paperclips. This stuff of the modern world is so pervasive, its accessibility so vital, that the continued flow at a low cost that could not have been envisaged by earlier generations, cannot be over-estimated. The delivery of the 500 millionth tonne during Australia's Bicentennary is a particularly appropriate way of marking a milestone in our history. Mining has played a key role in this country's fortunes for most of that 200 years. This has been especially so in the past 20 with the establishment of the iron ore industry. Mt Newman Mining has been a distinguished participant, and has become one of the world leaders, a position confirmed when BHP acquired control in early 1986. The venture has been invested with a new dynamism since that time. There are major challenges ahead, but also exciting prospects. In an industry which has never been more competitive, Mt Newman can face the future with confidence. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Since the dawn of time, people have noticed that members of families tend to look alike, having similar hair or eye color, for instance. Similarly, ancient farmers and herders realized that if they mated, or bred, plants or animals with desirable traits (such as the ability to grow quickly or resist disease), they had a better than average chance of obtaining offspring with those traits. Still, the actual science of genetics and genetic engineering is only about 100 years old. Many genetic engineers and biologists have contributed to new understandings of heredity and the ways genes can be manipulated to stimulate certain characteristics in living things. "Modern Genetics" profiles 14 men and women who were among the leaders in making important genetic discoveries in research and new technologies. Profiles include James Watson, Francis Crick, Herbert Boyer, Stanley N. Cohen, Michael Bishop, and Harold Varmus. education and reference, science and technology, teen and young adult,9 - 12 years Teen & Young Adult, Chelsea House Pub (T)
