Angela's Ashes: A Memoir

2005, EAN: 0743550927

[SR: 1098862], Audio CD, [EAN: 9780743550925], Audiobook, Unabridged, Simon & Schuster Audio, Simon & Schuster Audio, Book, [PU: Simon & Schuster Audio], 2005-11-15, Simon & Schuster Audio, "Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood," writes Frank McCourt in Angela's Ashes. "Worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." Welcome, then, to the pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930 to recent Irish immigrants Malachy and Angela McCourt, Frank grew up in Limerick after his parents returned to Ireland because of poor prospects in America. It turns out that prospects weren't so great back in the old country either--not with Malachy for a father. A chronically unemployed and nearly unemployable alcoholic, he appears to be the model on which many of our more insulting cliches about drunken Irish manhood are based. Mix in abject poverty and frequent death and illness and you have all the makings of a truly difficult early life. Fortunately, in McCourt's able hands it also has all the makings for a compelling memoir., 13924791, Biographies & Memoirs, 13911211, Audio CDs, 13901671, Audiobooks, 2205888011, Custom Stores, 1040638, Specialty Stores, 916520, Books, 15853301, General, 13911211, Audio CDs, 13901671, Audiobooks, 2205888011, Custom Stores, 1040638, Specialty Stores, 916520, Books, 934994, Authors, 934988, Arts & Literature, 934986, Biographies & Memoirs, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 935044, Irish, 935032, Ethnic & National, 934986, Biographies & Memoirs, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 935056, Historical, 935058, British, 1051474, Canadian, 935090, Holocaust, 935092, United States, 934986, Biographies & Memoirs, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 928590, Ireland, 928598, Medieval, 928594, Potato Famine, 928596, Troubles, 928504, Europe, 927728, History, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books

Frank McCourt's haunting memoir takes on new life when the author reads from his Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Recounting scenes from his childhood in New York City and Limerick, Ireland, McCourt paints a brutal yet poignant picture of his early days when there was rarely enough food on the table, and boots and coats were a luxury. In a melodic Irish voice that often lends a gentle humor to the unimaginable, the author remembers his wayward yet adoring father who was forever drinking what little money the family had. He recounts the painful loss of his siblings to avoidable sickness and hunger, a proud mother reduced to begging for charity, and the stench of the sewage-strewn streets that ran outside the front door. As McCourt approaches adolescence, he discovers the shame of poverty and the beauty of Shakespeare, the mystery of sex and the unforgiving power of the Irish Catholic Church. This powerful and heart-rending testament to the resiliency and determination of youth is populated with memorable characters and moments, and McCourt's interpretation of the narrative and the voices it contains will leave listeners laughing through their tears. anthropology, arts and literature, authors, biographical, biographies, biographies and history, biography and history, cultural, ethnic and national, europe Biographies, Simon & Schuster Audio

Angela's Ashes - neues Buch

ISBN: 9780743550925

CD-Audio, [PU: SIMON & SCHUSTER], THE RUNAWAY NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND AUDIE AWARD WINNER "When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish immigrants and raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank's mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank's father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Perhaps it is a story that accounts for Frank's survival. Wearing rags for diapers, begging a pig's head for Christmas dinner, and searching the pubs for his father, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual cruelty of relatives and neighbors yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance and remarkable forgiveness. Imbued with Frank McCourt's astounding humor and compassion -- and movingly read in his own voice -- Angela's Ashes is a glorious audiobook that bears all the marks of a classic., Biography: Historical, Political & Military
