He was formerly Director of National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Lawrence Korb attended the Athenaeum of Ohio, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961. Going on to St. John's University, he obtained his Master's Degree in 1962, before joining the U.S. Navy in 1962. Korb served on active duty for four years as a Naval Flight Officer, and retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of Captain. On completing his active duty, Korb returned to graduate school, where he received his PhD at the State University of New York Albany in 1969. Korb served as Associate Professor of Government at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 1971-1975 and later Professor of Management at the Naval War College in 1975-1980. Korb served as advisor to the Reagan-Bush election committee in 1980 and was then appointed Assistant Secretary of Defense (Manpower, Reserve Affairs, Installations and Logistics) from 1981 to 1985. The authors also detailed plans to increase the manpower of the United States Army, to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction, to spread liberal democratic values throughout the Middle East, and to reduce American dependence on foreign oil. Korb is also a member of the Honorary Board of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, an organization dedicated to ending discrimination against gay and lesbian people serving in the U.S. military, and to repealing the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. Cover illustrations in color, interior illustrations black and white. Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone (born July 6, 1946) is an American actor, screenwriter, producer, and director. He is well known for his Hollywood action roles, including boxer Rocky Balboa, the title character of the Rocky series' seven films from 1976 to 2015; soldier John Rambo from the four Rambo films, released between 1982 and 2008; and Barney Ross in the three The Expendables films from 2010 to 2014. He wrote or co-wrote most of the 14 films in all three franchises, and directed many of the films. Stallone's film Rocky was inducted into the National Film Registry as well as having its film props placed in the Smithsonian Museum. Stallone's use of the front entrance to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the Rocky series led the area to be nicknamed the Rocky Steps. Philadelphia has a statue of his Rocky character placed permanently near the museum. It was announced on December 7, 2010 that Stallone was voted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the non-participant category. In 1977, Stallone was nominated for two Academy Awards for Rocky, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. He became the third man in history to receive these two nominations for the same film, after Charles Chaplin and Orson Welles. He received critical raves, as well as his first Golden Globe Award and third Academy Award nomination, for reprising the role of Rocky Balboa in Ryan Coogler's 2015 film Creed. Rocky is a 1976 American sports drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and both written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. It tells the rags to riches American Dream story of Rocky Balboa, an uneducated but kind-hearted working class Italian-American boxer working as a debt collector for a loan shark in the slums of Philadelphia. Rocky starts out as a small-time club fighter, and later gets a shot at the world heavyweight championship. The film also stars Talia Shire as Adrian, Burt Young as Adrian's brother Paulie, Burgess Meredith as Rocky's trainer Mickey Goldmill, and Carl Weathers as the champion, Apollo Creed. The film, made on a budget of just over $1 million and shot in 28 days, was a sleeper hit; it earned $225 million in global box office receipts, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1976, and went on to win three Oscars, including Best Picture. The film received many positive reviews and turned Stallone into a major star. In 2006, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Rocky is considered to be one of the greatest sports films ever made and was ranked as the second-best in the genre, after Raging Bull, by the American Film Institute in 2008. The film has spawned six sequels: Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), Rocky IV (1985), Rocky V (1990), Rocky Balboa (2006), and Creed (2015). Stallone portrays Rocky in all six sequels, wrote the first five, and directed four (Avildsen returned to direct Rocky V and Ryan Coogler directed Creed)., Grosset & Dunlap, 1977, Carnegie Art Award, 2001. [SR: 834975], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780691048734], Princeton University Press, Princeton University Press, Book, [PU: Princeton University Press], Princeton University Press, One of the most influential figures in the history of photography, Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was also one of the most precocious. Born in Luxembourg, raised in Wisconsin, and trained as a lithographer's apprentice, Steichen took up photography in his teens and by age twenty-three had created brooding tonalist landscapes and brilliant psychological studies that won the praise of Alfred Stieglitz in New York and Auguste Rodin in Paris, among others. Over the next decade, this young man--the preferred portraitist of the elite of two continents--was repeatedly acclaimed as the peerless master of the painterly photograph. This volume, covering the period from the late 1890s to World War I, highlights masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which houses the finest collection of Steichen's early work in the world, and reproduces them in near-facsimile through four-color digital offset lithography. Steichen worked with a designer's inventive eye, a Symbolist's poetic sensibility, an entrepreneur's charisma, and--above all--the originality and finesse of a creative and painstaking printer to establish ambitious new standards in artistic photography. Overlaying the subtle tone-poetry of his platinum prints with repeated washes of harmonious color, he created unforgettable images. In his three famous twilight views of New York's Flatiron Building, one of the landmarks of turn-of-the-century architecture, Steichen crafted a powerful symbol of a new age. His stunning sequence of Rodin's Balzac figure in the moonlight is presented here as are his nudes, with their frankly erotic sense of flesh and weight. And the intense energy of a decade comes to life in his portraits of a diverse cast ranging from Richard Strauss to J. P. Morgan, Maurice Maeterlinck to George Bernard Shaw--and Steichen himself, the founding auteur of a century of celebrity. In the accompanying text, Joel Smith explores Steichen's maturing artistry in the light of contemporary developments in photography, graphic design, and the decorative arts. This is a stunning visual record of the emergence of Steichen as a great artist and is one of the most important books to be published on his life and work in recent years., 1104, Individual Artists, 8947733011, Artists' Books, 8947734011, Essays, 8947735011, Monographs, 1, Arts & Photography, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 2024, Collections, Catalogues & Exhibitions, 2020, Photography & Video, 1, Arts & Photography, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 505092, Equipment, Techniques & Reference, 2025, Color, 2028, Darkroom & Processing, 8622837011, Digital Editing, 10825721, Equipment, 8622840011, Flash Photography, 8622838011, Handbooks & Manuals, 2080, Lighting, 2085, Reference, 2020, Photography & Video, 1, Arts & Photography, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 8622825011, Individual Photographers, 8622826011, Artists' Books, 8622827011, Essays, 8622829011, Monographs, 2020, Photography & Video, 1, Arts & Photography, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 1525, Collections, Catalogs & Exhibitions, 1, Arts & Photography, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 9, History, 4762, Africa, 4808, Americas, 16252761, Arctic & Antarctica, 4884, Asia, 4921, Australia & Oceania, 4935, Europe, 4995, Middle East, 5032, Russia, 4853, United States, 5035, World, 4873, Ancient Civilizations, 5011, Military, 4987, Historical Study & Educational Resources, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books
