Jewish Family Saga Itzhak spoke slowly, deliberately. He seemed to take pleasure as he watched each word inflict a wound upon his father. "I hereby repudiate your Torah. I deny your faith. I have a new Bible. It is called Das Kapital. The God you so revere is dead!" Yaakov's face remained white. Then slowly the blood returned to his cheeks. He gripped the lapel of his frock coat. He strained with all his strength. The garment ripped. He stared down at the lapel hanging by a strip of Jewish Family Saga Itzhak spoke slowly, deliberately. He stared down at the lapel hanging by a strip of gabardine. "I have lost a son," he whispered. Itzhak stalked out of the house. Yaakov's lips moved reciting the Kaddish. His voice was barely audible as he chanted the ancient prayer for the dead. Isaac, and his foster sister, Annie, board a ship bound for St. Petersburg, Russia. Arrested for marching in a parade to present a petition to the Tsar, both are arrested, sentenced to be shot, and each, in separate violent escapades, escape to travel across Europe to England. After an eight-year interlude Itzhak, now Isaac, and Annie, set sail for America. Isaac buys a farm in Minnesota, marries pregnant Annie, and naming his cattle for his Jewish dairy-product customers, begins an agricultural career in the harsh Minnesota climate. Five children, one girl and four boys are born to Annie and Isaac. The middle child, Max, dramatizes the childhood years of the family, isolated from their fellow Jews, growing up with no knowledge of their ancient heritage, and confused about their neighbors' religious observances. Little by little, the Freedland children glean from their father taking chickens to the city for ritual slaughtering; from their parents refraining, except during stressful moments, from uttering "God"; and from their family, alone among their multi-ethnic neighbors, speaking Yiddish. Ma has a nervous breakdown, Pa sells the farm, and the family begins a new life in a Jewish neighborhood in Minneapolis.
