Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1971. 1st ed. VIII,260p. Paperback. Front cover a tiny little bit creased. Paper to tail spine a bit wrinkled. Series: Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics. 'Kenney has well succeeded in his aim, which is 'to provide the student with the guidance that he needs for the interpretation and understanding of the book as a work of literature'. His Introduction (...), devided into six sections (The Doctrine, The Poet, The Poem, The Poetry, Book III, The Text), is always interesting and thought-provoking, even when not entirely convincing. The text (...) is provided with an up-to-date apparatus of just the right length. The commentary is scholarly, thorough, perceptive, and economical. The treatment of stylistic and linguistic matters is particularly good.' (MARTIN F. SMITH in The Classical Review (New Series), 1974, p.204). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux., Cambridge University Press. Good+. 1976. Softcover. 0521290015 . Scholar's small bookplate to inner cover (R. E. Fantham). Chipping to extremities of wraps. Pen notes to a few pages. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 272 pages; The Adelphoe (The Brothers) of Terence is a Latin adaptation of a comedy of the same name by the Greek comic playwright Menander. The theme of the play is the perennially interesting question of the relationship between the generations and the proper way to bring up a son. In the introduction Mr Martin considers Terence in the context of Roman comedy generally and discusses the background of the Adelphoe. There is also a section on metre and scansion and a short analysis of the textual tradition. The full and detailed commentary, besides elucidating the text, seeks at all times to help the reader to understand the work as a play to be enjoyed. The edition is intended for use by students at school and university and for anyone wishing to read and appreciate the play in the original. ., Cambridge University Press, 1976, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge (...), 1982. 1st ed. XIII,254p. Paperback. 'The present volume seems to owe both its merits and its defects to the general approach of the series. The back cover of the book alleges 'an increasing demand for classical texts with commentaries that say more about works as literature and concentrate less exclusively on textual and syntactical matters', and Mrs Easterling's remarks on the play as literature are of the same high standard as her preliminary articles on the play (...). But thee is a negative side to the picture. (...) One wonders whether it was worth reducing linguistic and textual comment to a level that will often frustrate the other types of readership' (classical scholars and undergraduates). (MALCOLM DAVIES in The Classical Review (New Series), 1984, pp.7). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott.

Sophocles, P. E. Easterling:
Sophocles: Trachiniae (Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics) (Greek Edition) - Taschenbuch

ISBN: 0521287766

[SR: 1406660], Paperback, [EAN: 9780521287760], Cambridge University Press, Cambridge University Press, Book, [PU: Cambridge University Press], Cambridge University Press, Sophocles' Trachiniae is, in the editor's words, 'a subtle and sophisticated play about primitive emotions'. It is also a play which presents problems to a modern audience. Making full use of recent Sphoclean scholarship, Mrs Easterling attempts in her Introduction a detailed literary analysis of Trachiniae, helping the reader to understand better its intricate structure, the treatment of Deianira and Heracles, and the meaning of the final scenes. The notes in the Commentary of grammar, syntax and style include material which will be helpful to comparative beginners in the language, but the commentary as a whole is intended for anyone with a close interest in Greek tragedy. This is an edition for classical scholars, undergraduates, and students in the upper forms of schools. The Introduction is designed to be of use to readers who do not know Greek, as well as to specialists., 10399, Classics, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 2168, Ancient & Classical, 2159, Dramas & Plays, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10402, Greek, 5391236011, Ancient & Medieval Literature, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10159263011, Ancient & Classical, 5391236011, Ancient & Medieval Literature, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11714, Antiques & Collectibles, 11713, Encyclopedias & Subject Guides, 21, Reference, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11716, Art, 11713, Encyclopedias & Subject Guides, 21, Reference, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11773, Foreign Language Study & Reference, 11811, Instruction, 11495, Foreign Language Dictionaries & Thesauruses, 21, Reference, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11970, Words, Language & Grammar, 11972, Alphabet, 11975, Communication, 11977, Etymology, 11981, Grammar, 11983, Handwriting, 10166937011, Lexicography, 11986, Linguistics, 11990, Phonetics & Phonics, 541648, Public Speaking, 11994, Reading Skills, 11996, Reference, 11998, Rhetoric, 12000, Semantics, 9408970011, Sign Language, 12002, Speech, 12004, Spelling, 12006, Study & Teaching, 12008, Translating, 12013, Vocabulary, Slang & Word Lists, 21, Reference, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468236, Literature, 491406, American Literature, 491394, Creative Writing & Composition, 491408, English Literature, 491404, Literary Theory, 684272011, World Literature, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 684268011, Ancient, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books
