Chatto & Windus, London, first edition, 1977. Illustrated laminated wrappers, 4to, 28 cm. 126 pp. From the blurb: "In the seventh and eighth centuries A.D., as the early art of book illumination in the centres of Roman civilisation declined, the native art of the Celts and Anglo-Saxons flourished more richly than ever before. From Abbot Aidan's Lindisfarne, from Abbot Adamnan's Iona, and from the monasteries of Ireland, Northumbria and Kent, there emerged such famous manuscripts as The Lindisfarne Gospels, The Book of Kells and The Book of Durrow. The artists who laboured on these manuscripts achieved a 'national' style of decoration that was distinguished by intricate design and the extravagantly elongated representation of hounds, birds, snakes, lizards and mythical creatures - a perpetual and delightful challenge to the eye. Carl Nordenfalk of the University of Pittsburgh has provided the Introduction and Commentaries for the forty-eight colour plates reproduced in Celtic and Anglo-Saxon Painting. Additionally, there are selections from the manuscripts of that period illustrating the distinctive, colourful and inventive style of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon art in the 'Dark Ages'. Very Good., Chatto & Windus, London, first edition, 1977, 1977, Cambridge University Press, London / New York, 1973. 1st ed. VIII,255p. Paperback. Spine with reading trace. Signature and date on half title. 'In this edition of Sophocles' Electra, one of the greatest tragedies in Greek or any literature, Mr Keels presents the play as a study in revenge, but in a subtle way whose meaning depends upon the continuous use of dramatic irony. He relates the confrontations of principle and character depicted to the social and political controversies of the period in which Sophocles was writing. The introduction describes the background to the play, explains some of the main features of Sophocles' style, and outlines an interpretation which is fully worked out in the detailed commentary. There are appendices on metre and the text. The edition is intended for use by senior school and undergraduate students, and all those concerned to read and appreciate the play in the original. (Publisher's information). 'Kells assumes in most places a reader new to Greek drama, and has excellent sections on stichomythia, agon, lyric, and on Sophoclean style; textual problems are tackled with great clarity.' (Joint Association of Classical Teachers).
