In den civilisirten Staaten werden gegenwärtig nur mehr Nickel, Kupfer, Silber und Gold als Münzmetalle betrachtet u. Zw. Die ersten beiden als Stoffe zur Ausprägung von Scheidemünze, die beiden letzteren als eigentliche Währungs metalle. Die Geldfunction des Goldes und des Silbers ist jedoch eine uralte. Vermöge der ihnen anhaftenden ganz besonderen Unzerstörbarkeit und wegen ihres hohen Werthes haben diese beiden edlen Metalle schon im grauen Alterthume bei jedem Volke, das mit ihnen bekannt wurde, alsbald die Herrschaft im Geldverkehre erobert. Und diese auch bis zum heutigen Tage unbestritten behauptet.
