This book addresses the extensive inter-relations between technoscience and everyday life. Both technoscience and everyday life are elusive terms and this book contributes to, on the one hand, their theoretical explication, and, on the other, recent analyses of the ways in which they are empirically implicated in one another. Drawing on the work of such authors as Bruno Latour, Donna Haraway, Michel De Certeau, Michel Serres, and Henri Lefebvre, a theoretical framework is developed which can address the complex and heterogeneous concerns that fall under the rubric of 'technoscience and everyday life'. These concerns which include, for example, the role of technoscience in the alienation of everyday life, or the ways in which technoscience might enable 'resistance' to the processes of everyday discipline, are examined through a series of key themes. Chapters devoted to the themes of body, identity, citizenship, society, space, and time will explore how technoscience serves simultaneously to introduce novelty into, and sustain processes of reproduction in, everyday life. Sleeping bodies, posthuman identities, scientific citizens, biosocieties, global and nano spaces, and multiple temporalities serve to illustrate these themes as they are mediated through the complexities of technoscience. Theoretically innovative and empirically wide-ranging, this book examines the complex relations between technoscience and everyday life. It draws on numerous examples, including both mundane technologies such as Velcro, Post-it notes, mobile phones and surveillance cameras, and the esoterica of xenotransplantation, new genetics, nanotechnology and posthuman society. ´´Technoscience and Everyday Life´´ traces the multiple ways in which technoscience features in and affects the dynamics of everyday life, and explores how the everyday influences the course of technoscience. In the process, it takes account of a range of core social scientific themes: body, identity, citizenship, society, space, and time. It combines critique and microsocial analysis to develop several novel conceptual tools, and addresses key contemporary theoretical debates on posthumanism, social-material divides, process philosophy and complexity, temporality and spatiality. The book is a major contribution to the sociology of everyday life, science and technology studies, and social theory.
