Niebuhr and his companions have hitherto paflcd, tyranny, ignorance, and indolence, have fo much difcouraged and checked industry, ingenuity, and civilization, that Targe trains of land are left uncultivated and defart in the fineft climate of Weglobe. Indeed the author relinquifhes the epithet fellx even in the two provinces of Yemen and Hadramaut; as he did not find that the Arabians themfelves ever called their country Arabia the happy; which epithet was formerly applied by others, more to the climate and fertility of the foil, than to the people. I fhould have wifhed (fays our author, ) to add a brief compend (compendium) of the hiftory of this fmgular nation. But this I found impoflible. In the Eaft there are no libraries, and no men of deep erudition, refources which a traveller might find with great facility in Europe. Yet there are ancient Arabic hiftorians; but the copies of their works are very rare, as I learned at Kahira and Mokha. It would be of confequence, however, to examine thofe authors, who are dill unknown in Europe. The fearch, I am perfuaded, could hardly prove truitlels. Thofe works would throw new light on feveral epochs in the hillory of ancient nations.' Sir William Jones, in his 41!) anniverfary difcourfe delivered to the Bengal Society, in 1787, feems to have purfued this idea. The fcond chapter of this volume treats of tie extent and di- v'tons of Arabia, in refpeil of which Geographers at prefent are not agreed.
