Susan Blackmore, Richard Dawkins:
The Meme Machine (Popular Science) - Taschenbuch

ISBN: 019286212X

[SR: 478808], Paperback, [EAN: 9780192862129], Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press, Book, [PU: Oxford University Press], Oxford University Press, What is a meme? First coined by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene, a meme is any idea, behavior, or skill that can be transferred from one person to another by imitation: stories, fashions, inventions, recipes, songs, ways of plowing a field or throwing a baseball or making a sculpture. The meme is also one of the most important--and controversial--concepts to emerge since The Origin of the Species appeared nearly 150 years ago. In The Meme Machine Susan Blackmore boldly asserts: "Just as the design of our bodies can be understood only in terms of natural selection, so the design of our minds can be understood only in terms of memetic selection." Indeed, Blackmore shows that once our distant ancestors acquired the crucial ability to imitate, a second kind of natural selection began, a survival of the fittest amongst competing ideas and behaviors. Ideas and behaviors that proved most adaptive--making tools, for example, or using language--survived and flourished, replicating themselves in as many minds as possible. These memes then passed themselves on from generation to generation by helping to ensure that the genes of those who acquired them also survived and reproduced. Applying this theory to many aspects of human life, Blackmore offers brilliant explanations for why we live in cities, why we talk so much, why we can't stop thinking, why we behave altruistically, how we choose our mates, and much more. With controversial implications for our religious beliefs, our free will, our very sense of "self," The Meme Machine offers a provocative theory everyone will soon be talking about., 11162, Developmental Psychology, 11119, Psychology & Counseling, 10, Health, Fitness & Dieting, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 226685, Behavioral Sciences, 11237, Anthropology, 226686, Behavioral Psychology, 573358, Cognitive Psychology, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 226688, Biology, 13524, Cell Biology, 226689, Developmental Biology, 226690, Entomology, 13537, Marine Biology, 172406, Microbiology, 13540, Molecular Biology, 227277, Biostatistics, 13469, Biological Sciences, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 13824, Evolution, 13491, Fossils, 13922, Game Theory, 13535, Genetics, 13540, Molecular Biology, 16311091, Organic, 13542, Paleontology, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 6511985011, Developmental Psychology, 6511980011, Psychology, 173514, Medical Books, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11235, Cultural, 11233, Anthropology, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11288, Sociology, 16244271, Abuse, 271633011, Class, 297480, Death, 11291, Marriage & Family, 16311191, Medicine, 10582, Race Relations, 11293, Rural, 11294, Social Theory, 11296, Urban, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 684289011, Biology, 491702, Biology & Life Sciences, 468216, Science & Mathematics, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491496, Developmental Psychology, 491490, Psychology, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491448, Anthropology, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491478, Sociology, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

The Meme Machine - Taschenbuch

ISBN: 9780192862129

ID: 9780192862129

Humans are extraordinary creatures, with the unique ability among animals to imitate and so copy from one another ideas, habits, skills, behaviours, inventions, songs, and stories. These are all memes, a term first coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976 in his book The Selfish Gene. Memes, like genes, are replicators, and this enthralling book is an investigation of whether this link between genes and memes can lead to important discoveries about the nature of the inner self. Confronting the deepest questions about our inner selves, with all our emotions, memories, beliefs, and decisions, Susan Blackmore makes a compelling case for the theory that the inner self is merely an illusion created by the memes for the sake of replication.; Non-Fiction>Science Technology and Medicine>Mathematics and Science>Science Topics; Paperback, [PU: Oxford University Press]
