Bombs Away - The Story of a Bomber Team - Taschenbuch

2009, ISBN: 9780143105916

ID: 968458734

New York: Penguin Classics, 2009. 156 Pages. First published in the United States by Viking Press in 1942. Covers show very minor wear. No other defects noted. Interior text pages are flawless. Illustrated with 58 black and white photographs. On the heels of the enormous success of his masterwork The Grapes of Wrath and at the height of the American war effort John Steinbeck, one of the most prolific and influential literary figures of his generation, wrote Bombs Away, an account of his experiences with U.S. Army Air Force bomber crews during World War II. Penguin Classics published this new 2009 edition of Steinbeck's 1942 story of the U.S. Army Air Force and its bomber crew the essential core unit behind American air power that Steinbeck described as the greatest team in the world. James Meredith has written a new very insightful Introduction and commentary of this wartime history book. Steinbeck has been criticized for the simplicity of style especially by Hemingway. As he was writing this in 1942 the U.S. had just been drawn unwillingly into a war against fascism and were just gearing up for the fight and many authors were doing their part of the war effort to lift spirits of the country. There had been much talk about the mortality rate of a bombardier crew member and the intent of the book was to correct some of the misconceptions about the death rate, especially in comparison to infantry men. Steinbeck spent time going through the process of selection and observed the specific training for each of the members of the newly formed Army Air Force Bombardier Group. His hope was that this would help family members better understand what their son would be going through, beginning with the psychological and personality assessments that helped determine if the candidate was a good fit for a bombardier group. Steinbeck observed the training each member would receive once they were selected. The training was intense and he wanted the family members as well as a potential candidate to have an idea of what the program would be like. Meredith's new 13 page Introduction sheds new light on conditions that followed and the response that Bombs Away elicited. Contents in Nine Chapters: The Bomber, The Bombardier, The Aerial Gunner, The Navigator, The Pilot, The Aerial Engineer - Crew Chief, The Radio engineer, The Bomber Team, and the Missions.. Second Edition First Pinting Stated. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5" x 7 3/4"., Penguin Classics, 2009
