Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1985. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. William Stanton (Jacket Illustration Photograph). x, [2], 158, [4] pages. Richard P. Feynman was a Professor of Physics at the California Institute of Technology. This book is a straightforward explanation of a rather difficult subject--the theory of quantum electrodynamics for a nontechnical audience. It is designed to give the interested reader an appreciation for the kind of thinking on which physicists rely to explain how Nature behaves. It is a record of the lectures on quantum electrodynamics given at UCLA by Richard Feynman. Professor Feynman begins with the reflection of monochromatic light, showing with easily understood diagrams how physicists calculate the probability that a photon will hit a detector and proceeding to describe how oil in a mud puddle appears colored. He explains how this view of photons as particles of light accounts for familiar effects such as light bouncing off a mirror, light bending when it goes from air into water, and light focused by a lens. Next he writes on electrons and their interactions. Finally we see how the theory of quantum electrodynamics helps us understand quarks, gluons, and other major terms of current physics; he also discusses the relation of quantum electrodynamics to the rest of physics., Princeton University Press, 1985
