Ann Patchett:
Bel Canto - Taschenbuch

2007, ISBN: 0060838728

[SR: 19413], Paperback, [EAN: 9780060838720], Harper Perennial, Harper Perennial, Book, [PU: Harper Perennial], 2005-08-02, Harper Perennial, Somewhere in South America at the home of the countrys vice president a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of the powerful businessman Mr Hosokawa Roxanne Coss operas most revered soprano has mesmerized the international guests with her singing It is a perfect evening - until a band of gunwielding terrorists takes the entire party hostage But what begins as a panicked life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different a moment of great beauty as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different continents become compatriots intimate friends and lovers, In an unnamed South American country, a world-renowned soprano sings at a birthday party in honor of a visiting Japanese industrial titan. His hosts hope that Mr. Hosokawa can be persuaded to build a factory in their Third World backwater. Alas, in the opening sequence, just as the accompanist kisses the soprano, a ragtag band of 18 terrorists enters the vice-presidential mansion through the air conditioning ducts. Their quarry is the president, who has unfortunately stayed home to watch a favorite soap opera. And thus, from the beginning, things go awry. Among the hostages are not only Hosokawa and Roxane Coss, the American soprano, but an assortment of Russian, Italian, and French diplomatic types. Reuben Iglesias, the diminutive and gracious vice president, quickly gets sideways of the kidnappers, who have no interest in him whatsoever. Meanwhile, a Swiss Red Cross negotiator named Joachim Messner is roped into service while vacationing. He comes and goes, wrangling over terms and demands, and the days stretch into weeks, the weeks into months. With the omniscience of magic realism, Ann Patchett flits in and out of the hearts and psyches of hostage and terrorist alike, and in doing so reveals a profound, shared humanity. Her voice is suitably lyrical, melodic, full of warmth and compassion. Hearing opera sung live for the first time, a young priest reflects: Never had he thought, never once, that such a woman existed, one who stood so close to God that God's own voice poured from her. How far she must have gone inside herself to call up that voice. It was as if the voice came from the center part of the earth and by the sheer effort and diligence of her will she had pulled it up through the dirt and rock and through the floorboards of the house, up into her feet, where it pulled through her, reaching, lifting, warmed by her, and then out of the white lily of her throat and straight to God in heaven. Joined by no common language except music, the 58 international hostages and their captors forge unexpected bonds. Time stands still, priorities rearrange themselves. Ultimately, of course, something has to give, even in a novel so imbued with the rich imaginative potential of magic realism. But in a fractious world, Bel Canto remains a gentle reminder of the transcendence of beauty and love. --Victoria Jenkins, 2205888011, Custom Stores, 7187330011, Amazon Publishing, 16256501011, Audible Audiobooks, 13901671, Audiobooks, 14244971, Bargain Books, 13621591, Boxed Sets, 194725011, Canada Day Deals, 377366011, Christian Living Store, 263003011, For Dummies Store, 2354164011, Formats, 714830011, Kids & Family Store, 370821011, Qualifying Textbooks - Fall 2007, 1040638, Specialty Stores, 916520, Books, 16186961011, Caribbean & Latin America, 16186956011, Regional & Cultural, 932240, Drama & Plays, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 2056047011, Literary, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books

Ann Patchett:
Bel Canto - neues Buch

2005, ISBN: 9780060838720

ID: 739775473

The critically reviewed novel opens with the kidnapping of a Japanese CEO, Mr. Hosokawa, and his sidekick-translator, Gen, while on a trip to an unnamed South American country for a lavish birthday party in Hosokawas honor at which Roxane Coss, a famous American opera diva, is entertaining the guests. Though an unlikely setting for a sublime novel which, at its core, reminds us what it is that makes us human, Bel Canto is all that--and more. It is also a story about language, culture, struggle, love and music, an exploration of what divides us, and most importantly, what unites us. To set a novel in a hostage situation is a bold move, but to render from that dramatic situation a moving exploration of how it is possible for people to find ways of communicating, not only across linguistic but also cultural and political divisions, is nothing short of miraculous. The theatricality and dramatic intensity of the story itself, with its pairings of opposites in two love stories; the confusions of sexual identities; and the transformation of what at first seems to be a hellish imprisonment into a kind of paradise, are all wonderfully realized. Not only does the novel engender in the reader the very passion for art and the language of music, but the reader will find him or herself fervently wanting the magical awakenings and love affairs to continue forever, even though you know that the violence of the real world must and will intrude. This spellcasting novel about love and opera, and the unifying ways people learn to communicate across cultural barriers in times of crisis, was a critical success in hardcover. This new edition will have the new Perennial logo as well as a P.S. Section.
