Su questo sfondo in cui si annodano, a volte tragicamente, le vite di analisti e pazienti, si legano i destini di Lou e Anna, l'una incarnando l'"eterno femminino" goethiano, l'altra emancipandosi dai modelli femminili dell'epoca, pur restando sempre a fianco del padre.
