AIDS in Rural Botswana - Poverty, Gender Inequality, Marginalization, and Stigma - Taschenbuch

2008, ISBN: 9783639000771

[ED: Taschenbuch / Paperback], [PU: VDM Verlag Dr. Müller], Despite the efforts of the government, Botswana continues toface one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates. The commonapproaches to address HIV prevalence based on medical and behaviourmodels have not been effective. Particularly in rural areas, peopleavoid facing the reality of HIV/AIDS due to fear and stigma. Inthis project, the linkage between HIV/AIDS and social, economic andcultural factors is explored in rural areas of northern Botswana, where marginalized minority groups, particularly the San, live inextreme poverty. Data were collected through semi-structuredinterviews and focus groups in 2004. The analysis indicates thatpoverty, gender inequality, traditional beliefs related to illnessand healing, marginalization, and stigma interact and create keybarriers to current HIV prevention strategies. Recommendationsbased on my research and fieldwork indicate that HIV/AIDSprevention program must address poverty, gender equality, complexity of cultures, marginalization and stigma reduction at alllevels. This book should be useful to policy analysts anddevelopment workers in the HIV/AIDS field, especially thosestudying and working with minority groups., DE, [SC: 0.00], Neuware, gewerbliches Angebot, 22 cm, 96, [GW: 145g], Selbstabholung und Barzahlung, PayPal, offene Rechnung, Banküberweisung, Interntationaler Versand
