FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF A 2001 PAPER BY JEFFREY C. HALL, WINNER OF THE 2017 NOBEL PRIZE WINNER IN PHYSIOLOGY FOR HIS DISCOVERIES ABOUT THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS CONTROLLING THE BODY'S CIRCADIAN RHYTHM. Hall and two colleagues were "able to peek inside our biological clock," helping to "explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth's revolutions" (ibid). As this paper does, Hall's work used fruit flies as model organisms. By examining their internal functions, Hall and his colleagues "helped determine that the gene they were analyzing encoded a protein that accumulated in cells at night, and then degraded during the day" (Kolata, "2017 Nobel Prize in Medicine", NYTimes, 2 Oct. 2017). This paper also studies cryptochromes, a class of flavoproteins that, in their sensitivity to blue light, are involved in the circadian rhythms of plants and animals" (Wikipedia). These proteins were of import because they build up nightly, then degrade during daylight; changing levels of the protein impact how our body adapts to differing times of day. "Over decades of research, [Hall and his colleagues] identified the mechanisms governing the clockwork inside cells, shedding light on the biology of humans and other multicellular organisms whose biological clocks function on the same principles" (ibid). "With exquisite precision, our inner clock adapts our physiology to the dramatically different phases of the day… The clock regulates critical functions such as behavior, hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism" (Nobel Prize Committee). The committee also noted that Hall and his colleagues's work was pivotal because the misalignment between a person's lifestyle and the rhythm dictated by an inner timekeeper - jet lag after a trans-Atlantic flight, for example - could affect well-being and over time could contribute to the risks for various diseases" (ibid). In many biological models it is necessary to allow the rates of change of the variables to depend on the past history, rather than only the current values, of the variables. The models may require discrete lags, with the use of delay-differential equations, or distributed lags, with the use of integro-differential equations. In these lecture notes I discuss the reasons for including lags, especially distributed lags, in biological models. These reasons may be inherent in the system studied, or may be the result of simplifying assumptions made in the model used. I examine some of the techniques available for studying the solution of the equations. A large proportion of the material presented relates to a special method that can be applied to a particular class of distributed lags. This method uses an extended set of ordinary differential equations. I examine the local stability of equilibrium points, and the existence and frequency of periodic solutions. I discuss the qualitative effects of lags, and how these differ according to the choice of discrete or distributed lag. The models studied are drawn from the population dynamiCS of single species (logistic growth, the chemostat) and of interacting pairs of species (predation, mutualism), from cell population dynamiCS (haemopoiesis) and from biochemical kinetics (the Goodwin oscillator).
