Reprint of 1772 edition, Paris: Chez Mutard. "Survey of women's political and literary accomplishments from the [ancient] Greeks to his contemporaries." - Joan E DeJean; Tender Geographies: Women and the Origins of the Novel in France. ; ix, 97 pages ., Champion - Slatkine, 1987, University Press of New England: . Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Abandoned New England focuses on five modern American visual artists and poetsÑWinslow Homer, Robert Frost, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, and Elizabeth BishopÑwho portrayed the stark traditional beauty of New England landscape. Their paintings and poetry of abandoned terrain ask: what does a landscape represent and what meaning can it have when nature's power appears supplanted by urban or technological forces and when the observing eye is no longer emblematic of an enlightened viewer? Abandoned New England pursues these inquiries by discussing shifting and conflicting cultural attitudes toward the wild, rural, and domestic. In her readings of texts and images, Paton explores landscape as the synthesis of the human and nonhuman, as a place simultaneously reflecting and resisting desire, as the setting for social dilemmas, as encounters with otherness and a past both lost and inescapable, and as an integral part of creating and limiting identity. Paton argues that although "landscape" seems to have lost some of its significance in the modern era, longings for its potential value persist. Landscape iconology, ecocriticism, green cultural studies, cultural geography, and aesthetics provide fresh perspectives on how iconic New England artists have depicted landscape, revised stale conventions, undermined biases surrounding nativism, and recharged our reception of the rustic pastoral. Ultimately, Paton's analysis of the works of these beloved New England artists demonstrates a postmodern yearning to reinvent nature and reimagine Eden., University Press of New England:, Wilmington, DE: Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2009. First English Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. The eminent Dutch philosopher Andreas Kinneging turns fashionable thinking on its head, revealing how good and evil are objective, universal, and unchanging and how they must be rediscovered in our age. In mapping the geography of good and evil, Kinneging reclaims, and reintroduces us to, the great tradition of ancient and Christian thought. Traditional wisdom enables us to address the eternal questions of good and evil that confront us in both public and private life. Though it is common to accept uncritically the blessings of modernity and its intellectual sources, the Enlightenment and Romanticism, Kinneging shows that traditional thinking is richer and more realistic. Indeed, we see how, in more than a few respects, the Enlightenment and Romanticism brought not progress but deterioration. Kinneging skillfully reformulates and defends the insights of traditional thinking for today's readers, demonstrating how an objective morality is to be understood and how we can know what morality demands of us. At a time when the traditional virtues have practically disappeared from our language (that is, all but onetolerance), he lays out the foundations of virtue and vice. Ultimately, Kinneging reveals the lasting significance of these seemingly archaic notionsto our own lives, to our families, to our culture, and to civilization. Tan cloth with gold spine lettering. Dust jacket is not price-clipped. No writing in the book. xii, 285pp., index. Solid copy. Full refund if not satisfied., Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2009

The Geography of Good and Evil: Philosophical Investigations (Crosscurrents) - gebrauchtes Buch

Contrary to the fashionable view in the Western world, good and evil are objective aspects of the world, contends the Dutch philosopher Andreas Kinneging in this latest entry in ISI's "Crosscurrents" series. Good and evil are not figments of the mind or the subjective creations of men; they are inherent in creation. They are not to be invented, but discovered. Thus, just as a geographer maps the physical globe, the geographer of good and evil must map the universe of good and evil. This, of course, is precisely what the tradition of classical and medieval natural law maintains. Kinneging contributes to that tradition by reformulating and defending its central insights in a way today's readers will understand - and find persuasive. Kinneging lays out the metaphysical and epistemological foundations of virtue and vice and discusses the merits of alternative moral notions, such as 'duties' and 'rights'. He contrasts the traditional, natural law view of the family with the modern view. And in a long chapter on conservatism he establishes that true conservatism consists in a defense of the classical and medieval natural law tradition against newfangled views derived from the Enlightenment and Romanticism. "The Geography of Good and Evil" establishes Andreas Kinneging as one of contemporary Europe's wisest and most insightful moral philosophers. ethics and morality, philosophy, politics and social sciences Politics & Social Sciences, Intercollegiate Studies Institute
