Canaries on the Rim: Living Downwind in the West (Haymarket) - Taschenbuch

2001, ISBN: 1859843212

[SR: 189764], Paperback, [EAN: 9781859843215], Verso Books, Verso Books, Book, [PU: Verso Books], 2001-07-16, Verso Books, The true story of a family's move to an idyllic oasis, Grantsville, Utah, on the edge of the Great Basin Desert. They soon discover disturbing tales of local sickness and realize that incidents of cancer and birth defects are legion. This is the tale of a seven year quest to understand Grantsville's hidden history of ecocide, and a stirring account of how the lessons learned in the wilderness were later applied to building opposition to hazardous waste disposal, chemical weapons incineration, industrial pollution and nuclear waste storage., The deserts of the world are the birthplaces of great religion, the inspirations for sublime expressions of art and feeling, the treasure houses of exotic beauty and remarkable forms of life. They are also the junkyards of industrial civilisation, the resting place for abandoned cars, scrapped aeroplanes--and a vast array of toxic wastes, nuclear and chemical.Chip Ward came to one of the planet's most unforgiving deserts, the flat saltpans west of Salt Lake City, Utah, to drive a bookmobile. He has emerged from it, years later, as a spokesman for that forbidding landscape, the repository of decaying plutonium, retired biochemical weapons and other manifestations of what he calls the "ecocidal schemes" of big business and government. Ward, working with other concerned Utah citizens, has been fighting an uphill battle not only to remove such threatening substances from desert dumps, but also to prevent new lethal trash from being hauled in from other parts of the country. That struggle that has been universally popular among his fellow desert dwellers: while across the country voters have rejected plans for proposed toxic-waste incinerators for toxic wastes, in that part of Utah, he writes, "we had a tradition of trading environmental quality for jobs and revenue"--and there is, he acknowledges, money to be made in lethal detritus, from which substantial fortunes have been born.Ward documents his group's efforts to clean up their corner of the American desert, a quest that took him into the halls of Congress and before voters across the country. The struggle is ongoing, with no end in sight. He pleads his cause in the pages of Canaries on the Rim, and to good effect. Above all, he emphasises that the desert should no longer be seen as a wasteland fit only for hiding our mess. "It is not desolate at all", he insists. "Desolation is what we have carried to it". --Gregory McNamee, 758964, United States, 268021, Historical, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 758928, Social & Urban History, 268021, Historical, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 759044, United States, 268041, Political, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772152, Health & Welfare, 772148, Social & Economic History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 278081, Conservation, 278080, Environment & Ecology, 57, Science & Nature, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 278099, Pollution, 278080, Environment & Ecology, 57, Science & Nature, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 570820, Environment, 564334, Scientific, Technical & Medical, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 275870, Government & Politics, 275890, Civil Liberties & Political Activism, 496554, Countries & Regions, 496870, Economics, 275885, International Institutions, 275882, International Relations, 275901, Political Science & Ideology, 275915, Political Structure & Processes, 275941, Reference, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 276509, Social Welfare & Services, 276482, Social Issues, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books
