The Crowded Sky by HANK SEARLS Air travel has become a routine part of our way of life, but mid-air coHisions continue to make tragic headlines which shock and bewilder an of us. In this exciting new novel the author of The Big X dramatizes a situation in which human frailty and mechanical limitations combine to create such a disaster. Hank Searls says in his prologue: "The airway is not a highway, but an invisible alley, sometimes of infinite height. Day or night, its traveler depends for safety not as the motorist does on keeping right or left of a center line, but on holding a promised speed and an assigned altitude. If he speeds up, he will overtake his predecessor; if he climbs or descends inadvertently, he is suddenly in an opposite stream of traffic approaching with the speed of sound." The Crowded Sky is richly informative about the technicalities of air travel; it is absorbing for the human problems it explores. A broken marriage and its effect on his teen-aged daughter distract the thoughts of commander Dale Heath as he pilots a Navy jet east to a meeting in Washington. Mike Ruble, co-pilot of Pacific Central's westbound commercial passenger flight, is concerned about the inflexible, routine-bound attitude of his captain, veteran Dick Barnett. A passenger aboard the flight, Dr. Ed Benedict, steels himself to make an agonizing decision and discovers that his professional code is frail comfort when the miseries of disease involve his own family. On the ground, at Amarillo Control Center, traffic controller Norm Coster experiences one of those nights he has learned to dread, heavy air traffic and freakish storms which make for strictly instrument-flight weather. On such a night pilots must depend completely upon the controller and follow his instructions implicitly. But sometimes they don't, and sometimes the thread of communication snaps .... Hank Searls has chosen a fresh, immediately important theme, one as close to the reader's interest as his next plane trip. He has developed it with dramatic power, sustained suspense and real insight into the small weaknesses as well as the courage of mankind. And through his own experience as a pilot he interprets the processes and the excitement of flight so vividly that the reader's knowledge is enriched considerably. This is a fast-moving, diverting novel, fascinating reading for anyone who has ever made a flight or expects to. It symbolizes affirmation, benediction and peace, and is used ritualistically in prayers, invocations and ceremonies, religious as well as secular. It is also a magical symbol beyond compare and is regarded as a vehicle of attaining liberation (moksha). Not only this, at the highest level, it is identified with Brahman, the Ultimate Reality. Using the Vedas, Upanishads, Yoga, Tantra and several religious texts as his sources, the author describes a plethora of interpretations of this mystical monosyllable which has since time immemorial captivated its worshipers, put yogis into trance, made Tantra practitioners ecstatic, and sent its changers into religious frenzy. The author also explains secular interpretations of Om in linguistics, psychology and structural analysis.Printed Pages: 192.. Second Edition. Softcover. New., Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Prologue Ireland, 1560 The chapel at Ballinarin, the ancestral home of the clan O'Neil, was filled to overflowing with family and friends who had come from as far as Malahide Castle in Dublin, and Bunratty Castle in Clare. The mood was festive as they prepared to witness the union of Rory O'Neil, eldest son of Gavin and Moira, and his beloved Caitlin Maguire. In a small room at the back of the chapel Rory paced while his brother, Conor, stood by the door and watched as the last of the guests filed into pews. "What's keeping her?" Rory paused. Sunlight speared through a high window, turning his dark hair blue-black. He was resplendent in black breeches and shirt, with his cloak bearing the O'Neil crest tossed rakishly over his shoulder. "You needn't worry that she's changed her mind, Rory. The lass has loved you since she was old enough to know her own mind. Just be patient." "Damn your patience." Conor grinned. "Aye, that was never one of your virtues, Rory. But give the lass time to make herself beautiful for her husband." "Nothing could make Caitlin more beautiful than she already is. And why should I be patient? I've waited a lifetime for this day." "Aye. It seems like you've been in love with her forever." "Since I was ten and two." He flashed the smile that had caused maidens from Derry to Cork to dream of snagging his attention. But Rory O'Neil had eyes for only one maiden. "I was born for her alone. I tell you, Conor, this day my life will be com~lete." He lowered his voice. "Did I tell you that I shpped over to see her last night? I told her I couldn't wait until today. I wanted to lie with her." Conor threw back his head and roared. "Don't let Friar Malone hear of this." "It wouldn't matter. She refused. She said she wanted to wait for her wedding night. It was to be her special gift to her husband." He grinned. "Husband. I like the sound of that.' , "And with all this love stored up, I'm sure your wedding night will be one to remember." Both brothers turned as the door was thrust in and a slender lass in a gown of pink gossamer hurried inside. "I was afraid I'd be too late." "Too late for what, Briana?" Rory couldn't help grinning at the sight of his little sister. Her waist-length hair, the color of flame, was wind-tossed. Her cheeks were bright with color. From the sound ?f ~er breathing, he could tell she'd just run the entIre d~stance from the keep to the chapel. All her young hfe Ruth Langan she'd been running to keep up with her two older brothers. ''Too late to kiss my brother before he left me for good." "You talk as though I'm going away. Caitlin and I will be living right here on the grounds of Ballinarin." "Aye. But you'll be a husband." She dimpled, and the two brothers knew she'd overheard at least some of their conversation. But it would go no further. Briana could always be counted on to keep a secret. "And in no time, seeing the way you two look at each other, you'll be a father as well. And you'll have no time for a sister." Rory drew her close and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I'll always have time for you, Briana. And you can come over every day and help Caitlin with the wee ones." "Just how many are you planning to have?" "At least a dozen. All the lads will be handsome like their father, and all the lasses will have dark hair like their mother, and skin as fair as the crystal water in the River Shannon, and so beautiful that I'll have to lock them up to keep the local lads from stealing them all away." Conor and Briana burst into gales of laughter. "That's what I like about you, Rory. When you dream," his brother said with a laugh, "they're always such grand dreams. Let's just hope it isn't the other way around. After all, your sons could be small and delicate like their mother, and your daughters could all be giants like you." "Not a chance. They'll ... " He paused at the sound of a commotion in the chapel and gave a smile of relief. "Finally. I was beginning to think-" At the sudden chorus of shouting voices his smile dissolved. He hurried from the room, followed by his brother and sister. A lad of six or seven, clothes tom and bloodied, stood gesturing wildly. "English soldiers. More than a dozen of them." Rory's heart nearly stopped as he shouldered his way through the guests. He recognized the lad as a s.on of Caitlin's eldest brother. He knelt down, caught him by the shoulders. "Where are the others, Innis?" "By the bend in the road." The boy's eyes were wide with pain and shock. "My da fell on top of me, pinning me to the ground. All I could do was watch. They're all dead, Rory." "No!" Rory's voice echoed through the chapel as he released the boy and jumped to his feet, pushing and shoving through the stunned crowd. Outside he grasped the reins of the first horse he spotted and leapt onto its back, urging it into a gallop. He could hear the sounds of other horses following behind, but he never looked back. He followed the bog road until he came to the bend. Even before he got there, he could hear the strange, eerie silence. No birds sang. No creatures moved. It was as though the entire land was holding its breath. And then he saw them. The mass of bodies. Animal as well as human. The ground ran red with their blood. The horses had died where they'd fallen, with lances through the neck or heart. The men had fought a fierce battle. Many lay, face up, still holding their swords. But the worst savagery had been inflicted upon the women. Rory saw the flutter of white. Caitlin's bridal gown. It was the only way he could identify her. He picked his way through the carnage and knelt beside her. The gown had been cut away, except for one sleeve that still clung to her wrist. From the marks on her body he could see that she'd been brutalized before her throat had been cut so violently her head had nearly been severed from her body. With a cry of pain and rage he gathered her against him and buried his face in her bloody hair. His body shook with great, wrenching sobs that spoke of a heart shattered beyond repair. "Rory. God in heaven, Rory." Conor was the first to find him. He could do no more than weep as he stood, watching his brother silently rage against the horror of it. As the others arrived, Gavin O'Neil strode through the carnage to stand over his firstborn son. His voice shook with raw emotion. "The lad, Innis, says the leader was called Tilden by the others. Tall, brawny, with yellow hair and a face disfigured by a scar that ran from his left eye to his jaw. 'Twill not be an easy face to hide." ''I'll find him." Rory unfastened his cloak and used it to cover Caitlin's nakedness. He staggered to his feet, cradling the broken body of the woman who had been his reason for living. This night she would have lain in his arms, in their bed. Instead she would lie forever in the cold, hard earth. He looked up to stare at his family and friends. All were weeping uncontrollably. His own tears had dried. His eyes, hard as stone, stared beyond the bloodstained ground. "I give you my word. I'll not rest until I find the English bastard who did this." His father laid a hand on his shoulder. "We'll fetch a wagon to take her and the others to be buried." Rory shook off the hand. "No one will touch Caitlin. I'll carry her. It's all I can give her now." It was a somber, silent procession that made its way back to the chapel. The guests in their wedding finery were a sharp contrast to the bloody bodies being hauled in hay wagons. At the head of the column walked Rory O'Neil, his tunic and breeches clotted with blood. The body in his arms was completely covered with his cloak, except for a spill of raven hair matted with blood and grass. At the chapel he continued to stand and hold Caitlin cradled to his chest as a hole was dug and Friar Malone began the words that would consign the body to holy ground. For hours, while the holes were dug and the bodies buried, Rory continued to kneel silently at the mound of earth that covered his beloved. And when the last body had been disposed of, he looked around the grave site, then fixed his gaze on the distance. As his family gathered around, he embraced his mother and father, and kissed his sister's cheek. Briana's cries became great, wracking sobs that shook her slender frame. "You musn't go, Rory. Please, don't go. If you do, I'll never see you again." "Hush now." He held her close for a moment, whispering against her forehead, "I'll return. Trust me." Conor clamped 9a hand on his shoulder. "Will you let me come with you?" Rory gave a firnl shake of his head. "It's something I must do alone. You'll be needed here." He turned to his mother, who stood behind Innis, her arms wrapped around his thin shoulders. "You'll see to the lad?" She nodded. "He'll be a son to me, until my own returns." Rory strapped on a sword and tucked a knife at his waist and in his boot. His father removed his own cloak, which bore the O'Neil crest, and wrapped it around his son's shoulders. Lifting his hand in benediction he said, "May God ride with you, Rory, and bring you home to those who love you." Without a word, Rory pulled himself onto the back of his horse. He turned for one last look at Ballinarin. In the distance Croagh Patrick stood guard over the land. The mountain changed color so rapidly it was never the same. Earlier, it had been a harsh gray-green in the misty rain. Now it had softened to a peach hue in the warmth of the fading sun. Its sides were cloaked with stunted, twisted shrubs and trees and at the base, tall conifers and clumps of rhododendron. Waterfalls tossed themselves over the side, spilling down until they reached the river. Tom shreds of clouds drifted overhead. This lonely, savage piece of land held his heart. It was the only place he'd ever wanted to be. But now, the deceptively gentle scene mocked him. Because of the violence that had occurred here, he would begin an odyssey. An odyssey that could take him far away for years, or even a lifetime, until this thing was finished. Bhasa is a celebrated name in classical Sanskrit drama. Although his dates have not been conclusively established, it is certain that he preceded Kalidasa, who has praised him by name in the prologue of one of his own plays. It has been suggested that Bhasa lived in the Mauryan period, the fourth or the third century BC, but most scholarly opinion places him in the first or the second century AD. Bhasa`s plays were lost over a period of time but thirteen were rediscovered in Kerala at the beginning of the twentieth century. Of these six, forming the present collection, are based on the Mahabharata story which Bhasa embellished for obtaining dramatic effects. The remaining seven are derived from the Ramayana, the Harivamsa and legends and stories prevalent at the time. Bhasa wrote in a period which was politically, socially, economically and most importantly, culturally dynamic. Theatre was already an established art form and the foremost treatise on fine arts, Bharata`s Natyasastra, was written in the same period. Plays were written and performed by professionals supported by other well-developed aspects of stagecraft. For over fifteen hundred years classical Indian commentators and anthologists have counted Bhasa among the foremost writers of ancient India. He made use of the Sanskrit language in a simpler form as compared to the more ornate style of later playwrights. He dispensed with the opening benediction or nandi and began his plays directly with the stage direction. And, most importantly, he broke with convention by giving a tragic ending to one of his plays, Urubhangam, with the death of the hero on stage. The acclaimed New York Times bestselling author returns with a new stand-alone novel—a powerful and utterly riveting tale that skillfully moves between past and present to explore the lasting effects of crime on a victim's life....Dimensions: 9 x 6 x 1.4 inches Weight: 1.2 pounds ..I'd Know You Anywhere Eliza Benedict cherishes her peaceful, ordinary suburban life with her successful husband and children, thirteen-year-old Iso and eight-year-old Albie. But her tranquillity is shattered when she receives a letter from the last person she ever expects—or wants—to hear from: Walter Bowman. There was your photo, in a magazine. Of course, you are older now. Still, I'd know you anywhere. In the summer of 1985, when she was fifteen, Eliza was kidnapped by Walter and held hostage for almost six weeks. He had killed at least one girl and Eliza always suspected he had other victims as well. Now on death row in Virginia for the rape and murder of his final victim, Walter seems to be making a heartfelt act of contrition as his execution nears. Though Eliza wants nothing to do with him, she's never forgotten that Walter was most unpredictable when ignored. Desperate to shelter her children from this undisclosed trauma in her past, she cautiously makes contact with Walter. She's always wondered why Walter let her live, and perhaps now he'll tell her—and share the truth about his other victims. Yet as Walter presses her for more and deeper contact, it becomes clear that he is after something greater than forgiveness. He wants Eliza to remember what really happened that long-ago summer. He wants her to save his life. And Eliza, who has worked hard for her comfortable, cocooned life, will do anything to protect it—even if it means finally facing the events of that horrifying summer and the terrible truth she's kept buried inside. An edgy, utterly gripping tale of psychological manipulation that will leave readers racing to the final page, I'd Know You Anywhere is a virtuoso performance from acclaimed, award-winning author Laura Lippman that is sure to be her biggest hit yet. ,,,,,,,This would be Shipped Media mail via USPS within the United States, since the mail people actually deliver directly everywhere in the US effectively, and we need to support and use the postal service so its there in the future, it comes from the Los Angeles Area at whatever PO is closest to my errands or my life that day since I carefully pack your book then have to hop on the Vespa and visit the PO to have it placed in our mail system...Your purchase helps a middle aged college girl buy more books and the occasional pedicure. .. a dental visit or two .In addition, I need to downsize my personal library built over the years......I sell books on various sites, among other collectible things, , under LaxVespa, but my best pricing is here at Biblio for books.. , Harperluxe, Mariner Books, 1989-06-26. Om is the most sacred mantra in major Indic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Who is God? What is death? What is worth dying for? How do you explain fanaticism and violence waged in the name of God? Candid responses and profound comments by the world’s great spiritual leaders are accompanied by magnificent, never-before-published images of these wise men and women, as well as ordinary people engaged in religious practices around the world. Their voices span geographical and theological distances yet come together to create a spiritually satisfying and meaningful worldview. Luminaries such as the Dalai Lama, Pope Benedict XVI, the Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Israel, and the Archbishop of Canterbury appear alongside leaders in the Shinto, Hindu, and Sikh communities. Heads of the Christian and Muslim faiths are represented, including Catholic, Lutheran, Southern Baptist, Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Shiite, and Sunni. Each leader’s first-person account of his or her spiritual path is illustrated with powerful photographs of private and public moments. Gracefully interspersed with the photographs are the thoughtful answers to the questions posed by the Naudet brothers, who gained unprecedented access to these world spiritual leaders following their prizewinning documentary film 9/11. Timed for Easter and Passover, In God’s Name offers readers a rare opportunity to know 12 of the most holy people alive today and to read their answers to eternal questions of life and death, war and peace, doubt and belief, and the nature of God. ; 1 x 8.7 x 5.6 Inches; 272 pp ., National Geographic, 2008, London: The Medici Society Limited, 1983. This timely analysis explores the controversial legacy of Pope John Paul II, and the great challenges facing his successor, Benedict XVI, as he leads the Catholic Church into the 21st century. Collins, a former member of the Catholic priesthood, also demystifies the complex selection process involved in the election of the New Pope. Benedict XVI's background is discussed, as well as the future of Catholicism under the direction of this conservative and "transitional" Pope. He admits to feeling a sense of pessimism upon the election of Benedict XVI. As far back as 1998, Collins expressed concern for Cardinal Ratzinger's attitudes and approach to Catholicism. He objected to Ratzinger's belief that Catholic doctrine should condemn euthanasia and view Anglican orders as invalid and declared that he revealed a lack of ecumenical sensitivity. Mrs. Kennedy would have done everything better in fact, heard Confessions, forgiven sins, sung the Tantum Ergo at Benediction, buried the dead. Mrs. Kennedy would have looked the part too, tall and angular like the Bishop, not round and small like Father Gunn. Mrs. Kennedy's eyes were soulful and looked as if they understood the sadness of the world. Most of the time he was very happy in Shancarrig, a peaceful place in the midlands. Most people only knew it because of the huge rock that stood high on a hill over Barna Woods. There had once been great speculation about this rock. Had it been part of something greater? Was it of great geological interest? But experts had come and decided while there may well have been a house built around it once, all traces must have been washed away with the rains and storms of centuries. It had never been mentioned in any history book. All that was there was one great rock. And since carrig was the Irish word for rock that was how the place was named-Shancarrig, the old rock. From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Whatever your political leanings, you'll be alternately pleased and dismayed by the parade of highly intelligent contributors-including fiction author Lorrie Moore, New Yorker staff writer Susan Orlean and Vanity Fair editor Leslie Bennetts-offering their views on presidential candidate and former First Lady Hillary Clinton. Though many issues are covered, the most prevalent is the gender question: "I wish I could vote gender blind," says novelist and essayist Kathryn Harrison, but admits that, "everything else being equal, I will vote for a woman over a man." Rarely, if ever, has cookie-baking (or not baking), hairstyles and spouses been so often brought up in relation to a presidential candidate, but the question of authenticity dogs the every move of both Clinton and her critics; says Laura Kipnis, "the specter of loss looms at the moment, at least for men... So what gets spoken of instead? Well, hair for one thing." Elsewhere, Daphne Merkin looks at Bill and Hillary as a couple; Susan Cheever examines Clinton's list of favorite books; and Deborah Tannen explores the "damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't paradox of women in charge." Readers interested in Hillary, gender politics or the evolution of the presidential campaign should find this book fascinating. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review "A timely book of essays (or critiques, it often seems) written by many of today’s prominent women writers....the book is decidedly fluid....the contributors share a certain elegance in tone....the collection is a unique study and more insightful, if critical, than a general biography." -- Forbes.com "An unusually insightful and particularly well written collection." -- Daily News "As these witty, insightful voices struggle to get a grasp on this larger-than-life figure, they expose how difficult a task that really is." -- Redbook Magazine "Clever, entertaining, provocative, and elegantly written." -- Newsweek "Intriguing. These essays attest to the infinite subjectivity of people’s views, the pure relativism of perception. This volume of reflections corroborates Mrs. Clinton’s own long-ago observation that she is ‘a Rorschach test’ for voters." -- Michiko Kakutani, New York Times "Pithy, imaginative, and bold essays by exceptionally shrewd women writers....In all, a discerning, engrossing dissection not only of a galvanizing figure but also of our conflicted feelings about women and power." -- Booklist "The collection gathers strength as the variety and ferocity of opinions, insights, disappointments, and projections unfolds, often revealing more about the writers than about Hillary, and more about our warring notions of power, politics, and sex roles than it seems possible to hold in any brain at one time." -- Elizabeth Benedict, Huffington Post "Thirty Ways does provide grist for thought....canny and thoughtful." -- New York Observer "This original collection features a stellar group of women writers." -- Newsday "Well-written...thoughtful." -- Miami Herald. ABOUT THE BOOK Emerald Embrace A HARROWING ESCAPE Miranda Phillips' cruel guardian has given her an ultimatum: turn over the money left to her by her deceased parents or her young brother Jeremy will be sent away. Terrified at losing her beloved sibling, Miranda flees with the boy to a remote island off the coast of Washington. There, she accepts a position as governess to a wheelchair-bound eight-year-old girl who is plagued by nightmares of her mother's mysterious disappearance, and whose father, the electrifying Luc Benedict, fills Miranda with emotions she has never felt before. A DANGEROUS PASSION Confounded by his child's illness and his inability to keep a governess, Luc Benedict is desperate to save his daughter - and Miranda Phillips is his last chance. Before long, this startlingly beautiful woman is taking charge of the household, winning the trust of his daughter, and arousing an ungovernable desire in him. But as need flames into uncontrollable passion, a dark secret from the past threatens to destroy them both, weaving a web of treachery and betrayal that could bring heartbreak or happiness to those who dare to love. PASSION'S POWER "Don't kiss me again," she said a bit shakily. "Don't worry, beautiful Mirry," he said. "What you're feel- ing right now, well, so am 1." "Then it's best if I ... I go." He straightened and turned away. "It's too late." "I'll go if I want," she retorted defiantly. He spun around. "You'll stay because I want you here. I have never known desire for a woman like I feel for you. From the moment I saw you .... Until I can understand it and ... and ... " "Control it," she supplied, knowing instinctively how he'd hate feeling out of control. "Yes," he said. "Until then you'll remain where I can watch you, hear your voice, touch you, and know you're safe. And I'I! damn well kiss you if and when I feel like it." A great surge of pleasure rushed through her, an exhilaration that she could be the cause of such a fiery reaction, that a man such as this, so magnificently masculine, could want her. She felt possessed already. ISBN 0-8217-5990-6 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. <br/><br/> <br/><br/>, Zebra Books, 1998, Red Fox. Used - Good. Ships from the UK. Former Library book. De Waal is well-known for her particular interest in monastic and Celtic spirituality and has written many popular books on these subjects. ., Geoffrey Chapman, 1995, San Francisco, California.: Ignatius Press.. The work of an internationally recognized biblical scholar (Rudolph Schnackenburg) is woven in with the observations of contemporary social critics as well as behavioral scientists. The author does not spare anyone's feelings in an attempt at a critical and objective analysis of the serious problems on the Catholic Chuirch and mainstream religious denominations in America." Whatever your political leanings, you'll be alternately pleased and dismayed by the parade of highly intelligent contributors-including fiction author Lorrie Moore, New Yorker staff writer Susan Orlean and Vanity Fair editor Leslie Bennetts-offering their views on presidential candidate and former First Lady Hillary Clinton.
